The building dates from 1911 and was built as a textile factory by the wealthy merchant Casimir Casaramona i Puigcercas. The architect was Josep Puig i Cadafalch. however it closed as a factory in 1918 and reopened as a warehouse in 1929. From 1940 the building was used by the Spanish National Police Force until the spanish banking giant "la Caixa" bought it in 1963.

In February 2002 after extensive refurbishment and construction of a new entrance by architect Arata Isozaki, it opened as a museum. It comprises almost three acres of exhibition space, a media library, auditorium, classrooms and a restaurant. Access to the museum is via a basement lobby reached from street level by an escalator.
