About Tossa De Mar Beach Town

Views: 563. Updated: Oct 6, 2021 by: Barcelona Travel Hacks

Tossa de Mar is a large beach town about 100km to the north of Barcelona with plenty of interest and charm. This town can be visited as a single day trip or my recommendation is a long weekend.

Where to stay overnight

There is a comprehensive guide PDF already available from the tossa de mar tourism website and in the documents tab of this website. Last time I stayed overnight I used Hotel Cap d'Or which is a charming little hotel at the foot of the castle walls. Any accommodation should be booked in advance. Camping is also an option.

Food and restaurants

When you exit the castle via the southern exit there is a multitude of restaurants with outside dining terraces that offer one dish to three dish meals and set menu's for prices starting from 20 euros per person. I highly recommend eating in one of these restaurants if your budget can stretch as the food is delicious. Note that a three-course lunch for two with wine, coffee, desert etc. may cost about 100 euros if ordering individual dishes from the menu.

For quick meals there is a multitude of pizzerias and hamburgueserias walking away from the castle along Carrer del Portal or along the front of the platja gran beach via Passeig del Mar.

Visiting Tossa De Mar Beach Town

Tossa de Mar Castle

From at least the 13th century, is a rare example of a preserved castle and walled city, many of which in catalunya were destroyed during the Spanish civil war. It is open to the public for free, although the privately-owned houses within the walls are closed to the public. There is a museum of art inside the caslte walls.

I would allow 2 to 4 hours to wander round the castle. I have prepared a suggested route of things to see in the castle and walled town. Note that the yellow arrows on my diagram indicate the entry points into the walled interior.

Shopping area for clothes and beach accessories

On the tourist map the shopping area of pedestrianised streets is marked in grey (Grid squares M&N 7&8) with the main street being carrer de Socors. Here there are many small boutique shops.

Chapel of Our Lady of Socorro

Whilst walking round the shopping area there is a small chapel (Grid square L7) which is worth a quick look.

Costal walks to secluded little bays

Walking either North or south along the coast for a few kilometres will reveal some stunning coastline scenery dotted with small beaches (or in Catalan - Cala).

Rent a bicycle to ride in the mountains

Bicycles can be rented from JimboBikes. A PDF list of bike trials can be found on the Tossa de Mar website or in the documents tab of this page.

Beaches

Tossa de Mar has three main beaches:

Playa Es Codolar (8-O on tourist map)

Platja gran (9-K,L,M on tourist map)

Platja Mar Menuda (12-I on tourist map)

My personal favourite is Playa Es Codolar because it is smaller and more intimate and when swimming in the sea looking back towards the town gives great views of the castle walls sat on top of the rocky cliffs.

Water sports

Rent a Kayak or paddle surf

Scuba diving for beginners or qualifications.

Glass bottomed boat trip around the small bays and inlets.

Getting To Tossa De Mar Beach Town

Moventis provide a regular bus service to Tossa de Mar. Last time I went, It costs 12.35 euros each way. Buses depart Estacion de Nord bus terminal (Metro L1 or RENFE Arc de Triunfo). Some busses also depart from Barcelona T1 and T2 airport. I strongly recommend booking bus tickets in advance to ensure availability of a seat. Journey time is 1 hour 20 minutes approximately.

Tickets and timetable can be found on Moventis Website.

For information about the Barcelona Nord Bus Hub visit the public transport page of this website.

Seasons in Tossa de mar

This town gets very busy in the summer months. most of my photos were taken off season or really early in the morning. Be sure to book accommodation and transport well in advance. Also plan any special activities in advance.
