13 things to do and see with a theme of Civil War and Castles.

Catalunya is on the frontier of the Spanish kingdom where the border with France has moved several times. As a result of this the Girona region of Catalunya has many frontier fortresses. Additionally, Catalunya has a long coastline, so almost every coastal town and port has a medieval castle. The Romans also built fortifications everywhere they settled (conquered). See the Roman Ruins theme for more about the roman setlements.

The castles and fortresses of Catalunya range from ruins on a hilltop to fully preserved museums. During the civil war Castles were used as prisons and execution sites. During the Civil war many structures were built to defend against the Francoist forces and his foreign military forces.
