About Plaça Sant Felip Neri with baroque church & fountain
The quaint, Plaça Sant Felip Neri is an unmissable corner of the Gothic Quarter, barri gótic in Barcelona. The baroque church on one side gives it's name to the square. The square is in the jewish Quarter, El Call, of el gótico and features a number of historic elements that make it particularly attractive, especially when you view it in silence.
Plaça de la Garriga i Bachs - Monument als Herois del 1809
This tiny square can be found next to the side entrance to Barcelona Cathedral and contains an interesting monument.
Realist monument that portrays five martyrs who were executed following an attempted uprising against the French troops during the occupation of Barcelona in 1808. In 1929 Josep Llimona was commissioned to create the five bronze elements on top of the plinth. The sculptures show the people who had been condemned to the garrotte, shortly before their execution at the Citadel. They were accused of attempting to free Barcelona from the French occupation forces who had made the city their stronghold during the War of the Spanish Succession.
The alabaster relief above the bronze statues was added to the monument in 1941, when it was rededicated following the Spanish Civil War. It depicts a series of angels and was sculpted by Vicenç Navarro. The monument is enclosed by ceramic benches. The tiling, based on an engraving by Bonaventura Planella, portrays the entrance of the Napoleonic troops to the city.
Plaça Sant Felip Neri
Following the narrow Gothic street Carrer de Montjuïc del Bisbe will lead you into Plaça Sant Felip Neri which is a secluded square with a fountain in the middle and a baroque church. On another side of the square are the buildings that once housed the city's shoe smith's and copper smith's guilds. Next to the church is the school of Sant Felip Neri so the square is sometimes full of playing schoolchildren.
The square has a dark history. In January 1938 42 people were killed, many of the children, by a civil war aerial bombing raid. The children were trying to take shelter in the air raid shelter below the church. The baroque style pitted façade bears the scars of the civil war bombing in January 1938. A bomb falling directly on top of the shelter.
You can still see the shrapnel scars on the church façade today.
Oratori de Sant Felip Neri de Barcelona
Built as an annex to the convent dels felipons in 1750 with a single cross-vaulted nave and rectangular apse. The church has side chapels with neoclassical altars and paintings by the Catalan art nouveau or modernista artist Joan Llimona.
