Day Trip Rucksack
Small 10L day trip and museums rucksack
The Barcelona Maritime Museum Museu Marítim de Barcelona is located in the building of Drassanes Reials de Barcelona, the former royal arsenal of Barcelona which built ships between the thirteenth century and eighteenth century.
During the time of the shipyard it was capable of housing up to 50 sailing vessels within the vaults. The Front of the building facing the sea had a sloped ramp down into the water. What is now in front of the museum is on reclaimed land that forms the modern port of Barcelona.
The Barcelona Maritime Museum can be found near to the column of Columbus Monument in the Port Vell area of central Barcelona.
The museum is broadly about the history of sailing from the early days with the history of the Spanish Navy since the Catholic Monarchs, in the 15th century, up to the present. Also contains multiple navigation instruments, weapons and paintings.
The Museu Marítim de Barcelona houses many replicas, the most famous being the replica of the royal galley Don Juan de Austria, Galera Real de Don Juan de Austria. The original galley was built in the Drasanes shipyard in 1568 and was the largest galley at the time being propelled by 290 oarsmen.
Additionally included in the Maritime museum visit, the 1918 built Schooner Santa Eulàlia which is moored in port Vell allows you to visit the main deck and an exhibition space below deck.
Although the museum does not compare to other maritime museums like the historic dockyards of portsmouth, it is worth the visit to see the vast vaulted roof, The royal galley and shooner Santa Eulalia.
Once you have finished in the maritime Museum, you can continue exploring the Port Vell area, Walk up Las Ramblas or head up to Montjuïc hill.
Most of the Barcelona Maritime museum is fully accessible for people with reduced mobility or pushchairs. This is a very child friendly museum.
The museum has lockers in the entrance hall for over sized bags. but a small 10L rucksack should not need to be put in the locker.
There is bicycle anchorage behind the museum in Av de les Drassanes with Carrer del portal de Santa Madrona although this is not a location I would consider it safe to leave a bicycle chained up unattended.
Don't forget headphones for the audio guide.
Note: that the Schooner Santa Eulàlia is not wheel chair accessible.
