101 things to do and in or near Barcelona with a budget of FREE to 10 Euros.

by: Barcelona Travel Hacks

On this page I have listed some free or relatively inexpensive things to do and see in Barcelona for free or almost free. A lot of these activities will be based around enjoying the many parks such as the Montjuic or Parc Ciutadella areas and gardens as well as some lesser-known parks and gardens such as the Labyrinth of Horta or Tamarita gardens and 3 gardens in the Zona Universitaria area of Barcelona.

The port area of Barcelona is free to walk around in and has some wonderful old buildings such as the post office and Our lady of mercy Basilica as well as enjoying the port from Maremagnum shopping Centre. Equally a walk from up Las Ramblas from the port to Plaza Catalunya passes via La Boqueria Market and Plaza Reial. Within the City itself there are mountain top viewpoints at Parc Guell and Carmel Bunkers which is free all the time. Montjuic and Tibidabo mountains provide some excellent viewpoints of the city from the gardens of Montjuic of Tibidabo church. Behind Tibidabo is the Collserola natural Park which is a large forested hilled park with some easy walking trails.

All of the above are within transport zone 1 and viable using the T-casual ticket of 10 trips for 11.35 euros. A trip being one journey from A to B with interchanges between metro and trains included. For example, a day walking in Collserola would be two trips one to get there and one to get back, completely free if you ride to Collserola by bicycle along the caraterra de Aiguas.

Barcelona has multiple Museums that are run by the city council and most of these museums offer free entry on the first Sunday of the month, some all day and some between certain hours. Additionally, a few privately run museums have also subscribed to this scheme. Note that due to demand on free Sunday's, the museums may ask that people book their free entry, especially during the covid pandemic as limits are placed on the number of visitors. My personal favourites for free first Sunday are the Museum National of Art Catalan (MNAC) by Montjuic Magic fountains (also free), Barcelona City History Museum (MHB) in the gothic quarter, Montjuic Castle and the Maritime Museum (MMB) in the port.

As well as Free Museums, Barcelona also has museums that have cheap entry for less than 10 Euros, two of which are Gaudi attractions: Parc Guell and Torre Bellesguard. Other Notable museums are the Pedralbes Monastery and CosmoCaixa Science Museum. Castelldefels castle which is a 20-minute train ride outside of Barcelona centre but inside transport Zone 1 is also worth a visit. Casteldefells platja beach is also in transport zone 1 and wort a visit in the summer because of the natural wide beaches and clear blue water.

Adding to the ten euro or less days out in Barcelona, there are a series of walks in the La Gariga to Figaro area about 1 hours train ride from Barcelona. The walks are free and the return train fare comes in at under 10 Euros. Heading south from Barcelona, Sitges is a beach town 35 minutes train from Barcelona and has several low-cost museums (under 10 Euros) with the train fare to Sitges being less than 10 euros return. Another beach destination to the north of Barcelona is Santa Pol de Mar with return train fare being 10 Euros.

Click on a photo to find out the details about each attraction, with a photo gallery, useful PDFs and other tips.
