Hassle free chilled beach. 20 minutes from Barcelona by train. 5Km natural sand beach. Great restaurants, night time discos in the chiringuitos
About Castelldefels Platja Beach town near Barcelona
Castelldefels Platja is a hassle‑free beach town near Barcelona, ideal for a relaxing day by the sea. The five‑kilometre stretch of natural sandy beach offers plenty of quiet areas, even in high season. Accessibility is excellent: Castelldefels is just a 40‑minute bus ride from Barcelona Plaça Espanya or a 25‑minute train ride from central Barcelona.
Castelldefels Platja is known for its vibrant nightlife, especially in the chiringuito beach bars that stay open late with live music and DJ sessions. The seafront is lined with restaurants and bars, but unlike Barcelona’s city beaches, Castelldefels Platja does not suffer from overcrowding, smoking restrictions, persistent drinks vendors, or issues with pickpockets.
It’s important to distinguish between Castelldefels town centre and the beach district of Castelldefels Platja. Although part of the same municipality, they feel like two separate towns located about 2 km apart. Castelldefels town lies inland and is primarily a residential commuter area with few hotels.
Castelldefels Platja, by contrast, is the five‑kilometre beachfront zone with numerous hotels just steps from the sand. If you want a beach‑focused holiday with occasional day trips to Barcelona’s main attractions, Castelldefels Platja is an excellent choice.
The backdrop of Castelldefels Platja is the Garraf Natural Park, and the seafront is lined only with low‑rise hotels of three or four floors, ensuring uninterrupted views of the mountains from the beach.
Castelldefels Platja has limited general services. You’ll find small supermarkets for essentials such as water, beer, wine, and snacks, but not the kind of large grocery stores suitable for a weekly shop. What the area does have in abundance is restaurants. For shopping, you won’t find many clothing stores, but there are plenty of beach‑focused shops selling umbrellas, inflatables, towels, sun cream, flip‑flops, and everything you might need for a day at the beach.

What to take with you for Castelldefels Platja Beach town
Castelldefels Platja Renfe station is fully step‑free, with lifts connecting the platforms to the underpass and a ramp leading directly to street level. This makes the beach area easy to access for visitors with reduced mobility, families with strollers, or travellers carrying luggage.
Safety Tip: It is important to always use the designated underpass when changing platforms. Several years ago, a serious accident occurred when a group of young people, who were attending a free concert on the beach, attempted to cross the tracks instead of using the underpass and were struck by a non‑stopping train, resulting in multiple fatalities. Since then, additional signage and safety reminders have been installed throughout the station. Visitors should follow all station guidance and only use the official pedestrian routes.
