The 14,119‑hectare Aigüestortes National Park, officially known as Parc Nacional d’Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici, is one of the great mountain landscapes of Europe — a place where granite peaks rise to nearly 3,000 metres, rivers twist through deep valleys, and more than 200 natural glacial lakes shimmer beneath the Pyrenean sky. Just three and a half hours from Barcelona, it’s the perfect rural getaway in Catalonia and my favourite escape from the summer heat.

This is a park shaped by ice and time. Over millions of years, glaciers carved out the valleys, leaving behind a dramatic mosaic of alpine meadows, evergreen forests, rocky ridgelines and crystal‑clear lakes. The contrast between the hard granite peaks, the deep green forests and the bright blue waters creates a colour palette that feels almost unreal. It’s no exaggeration to say that Aigüestortes is one of the most beautiful places in Catalonia — and one of Spain’s nine national parks, designated in 1955.

The park takes its name from Estany de Sant Maurici, the largest of its lakes, but the word “Aigüestortes” literally means “twisted waters” — a reference to the countless winding rivers that feed the lakes and waterfalls. Wildlife thrives here: golden eagles and bearded vultures circle overhead, while chamois, wild goats, rabbits, hares, grouse, cows and horses roam the valleys and high pastures.

Aigüestortes lies north of Lleida, around a three‑and‑a‑half‑hour drive from Barcelona. It’s an ideal destination for a rural summer holiday or a refreshing weekend escape. Public transport options exist but are limited and vary by season, so I strongly recommend renting a car to reach the park’s villages and trailheads comfortably.
