Description of El Prat & Castelldefels

Baix Llobregat is the region that covers the lower Llobregat River and its delta, including the towns of El Prat de Llobregat and Castelldefels. El Prat sits beside Barcelona Airport and is mainly residential and light industrial. From here you can access the Delta del Llobregat Natural Park and El Prat beach, two of the area’s most interesting natural spaces.

Castelldefels is effectively a town with two distinct areas. Castelldefels Platja is the beachfront district, lined with residential buildings, holiday apartments, and hotels. It has excellent seafood restaurants and lively summer chiringuitos. Castelldefels town centre lies slightly inland and is mostly residential, with the added highlight of a superb castle museum.

Note: Castelldefels Platja and Castelldefels (town centre) are two separate stops on the R2 Rodalies train line. Make sure you get off at the correct station depending on whether you’re visiting the beach or the castle.

Castelldefels Platja is only 20 minutes by train from central Barcelona and offers far better beaches and restaurants than the barcelona city beaches. It’s where I usually go myself. The area has far fewer beach vendors and no issues with beach crime or bag theft, which are unfortunately common on Barcelona’s beaches, especially Barceloneta.

If you’re planning a holiday in Barcelona and find accommodation prices too high, consider staying in Castelldefels Platja and commuting into the city for sightseeing. There is also a night bus service between Castelldefels Platja and Plaça Catalunya, making late returns easy.
