The Delta de Llobregat nature reserve stretches along both sides of the Llobregat River from Martorell to the Mediterranean Sea. This route explores the coastal section in El Prat de Llobregat, located behind Barcelona–El Prat Airport and surrounded by protected wetlands, dunes, and marshes.

Torre Parque Fluvial Baix Llobregat is a public watchtower offering 360‑degree panoramic views over the river delta, the agricultural plains, and the town of El Prat. It’s one of the best elevated viewpoints in the entire reserve.

Torretta Mira Mare is a wooden coastal lookout tower with sweeping views of the port, the floodplain, the river mouth, and the surrounding ruins. It’s a peaceful spot for birdwatching and photography.

Antiga Caserna dels Carrabiners consists of abandoned 19th‑century barracks built in 1844 by the Royal Corps of Carabiniers to combat smuggling—especially tobacco—and to monitor the coastline. During the military coup of 1936, the Carabiniers remained loyal to the Republic and were disbanded after the Civil War. From 1939 to 1970, the buildings were used by the Civil Guard.

Mirador del Semàfor is a preserved 1887 semaphore station built to regulate maritime traffic and prevent shipwrecks along the coast. Watchmen stationed here communicated incidents to Montjuïc Castle and assisted with rescue operations. The building was restored by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) as compensation for the construction of the metropolitan desalination plant.

The semaphore station and former barracks sit within a landscape of wetlands and coastal vegetation, including flooded marshes, reeds, seablite, marsh samphire, and large patches of esparto grass. The quiet, undeveloped beach nearby is an important feeding and breeding area for birdlife such as the Kentish plover, Audouin’s gull, and the osprey.

Visiting Delta Llobregat Park to Prat Beach

This walking or cycling route follows several drainage canals that form part of a protected tortoise habitat. As you approach El Prat beach, you’ll find a raised viewing platform that is popular with plane spotters thanks to its proximity to the airport’s flight path. Because the land around the airport cannot be developed, the entire area remains a marshland nature reserve.

The route finishes at El Prat beach, one of Barcelona’s best‑kept secrets. Known mainly by locals, it has a relaxed atmosphere, weekend volleyball tournaments, and beach bars serving good, reasonably priced food.

The southernmost stretch of El Prat, Remolar Beach, is designated as a clothing‑optional or nudist beach.

Hiking from Delta del Llobregat in El Prat with a Dog

Dogs are generally not permitted on beaches during the summer season (1 June to the last Sunday in September), except in designated dog zones. This route follows canals and green areas near roads, so dogs may need to remain on a leash. It is possible—though unlikely—to encounter Pine Processionary Caterpillars, which can be dangerous to pets.

At El Prat de Llobregat beach, Playa de Can Camins (between access points 22 and 24) is a designated dog beach. Dogs are allowed to swim and play here year‑round between 8:00pm and 08:00am.

What to take with you for Delta Llobregat Park to Prat Beach

For this walking route, I skip the beach umbrella and carry at least two litres of water, especially in warm weather.

If I’m heading directly to El Prat beach by bus without doing the walk, I bring the beach umbrella. A dry sack isn’t necessary, although an IPX8 waterproof phone case is useful if you want to take photos while swimming.

Because this entire area sits directly beside Barcelona–El Prat Airport, it is a strict no‑drone‑flying zone. Drone use is prohibited for safety and air‑traffic reasons, and enforcement is taken very seriously. Visitors should avoid bringing drones or attempting to fly them anywhere along this Delta del Llobregat route or El Prat beach.

Getting to Delta Llobregat Park to Prat Beach

Begin this route at Les Moreres station on the L9 Sud Metro line. After reaching the beach, you can return using the BaixBus PR2 or PR3 lines, which pass through Parc Nou and Centric metro stations in El Prat before terminating at the El Prat de Llobregat RENFE and metro interchange on the edge of town.

Note that the PR2 and PR3 buses only run all the way to the beach during the high season, from the beginning of June to the end of September. Outside these months, the buses operate their regular inland routes and do not serve the beachfront stops, so if visiting in the off‑season you will need to travel to the beach by bicycle or car.

Because the entire route is within Zone 1, you can use a single trip on the T‑casual Zone 1 travel card or the Hola Barcelona card for metro, train, and bus services.
