Description of the Costa Dorada (South of Barcelona)

The Costa Dorada is the stretch of coastline in Catalonia running south from Cunit to Alcanar on the Valencian border. Known for its golden sand, pine‑backed coves and relaxed Mediterranean towns, it’s one of the easiest coastal regions to explore from Barcelona.

The area is served by the Mediterranean Corridor railway, with frequent Rodalies trains connecting the northern towns between Cunit and Coma‑Ruga, and Regional services continuing further south to places like L’Ametlla de Mar, L’Ampolla and L’Hospitalet de l’Infant. This makes the Costa Dorada ideal for day trips or weekend escapes without needing a car.

The GR‑92 coastal trail — also known as La Ronda or Camí de Ronda — runs the full length of the Mediterranean coastline. Along the Costa Dorada it passes through some of the region’s most picturesque fishing villages and seaside towns, including Roc de Sant Gaietà, Tamarit, Altafulla, L’Ametlla de Mar and L’Ampolla. The route also links remote coves, wild beaches and dramatic headlands that feel far removed from the busier resort areas.

The regional capital, Tarragona, sits at the heart of the Costa Dorada and is worth a visit in its own right for its Roman heritage, medieval old town and excellent urban beaches.
