About The Figueres Day Trip

Figueres, a medium-sized town 140 km north of Barcelona, is Dalí’s hometown and famous for the Dalí Theatre-Museum. While this is the main tourist attraction, Figueres offers enough museums and monuments to make it a full day trip rather than a half-day coach excursion focused only on Dalí.

Figueres is the last major town before the French border, and this frontier vibe is felt when visiting the Sant Ferran Fortress. The town sits on inland plains in the Alt Empordà region of northern Catalonia, about 30 minutes’ drive from the Costa Brava.

Pronounced 'fuh-geuh-res', Figueres is most famous as the birthplace of Salvador Dalí and home to his self-curated Theatre-Museum, one of the most popular attractions for visitors to Barcelona. Dalí’s funeral took place in Sant Pere Church before his interment inside the Dalí Museum, and the church remains visitable today.

Figueres has a rich history: surrendered to France in 1794, regained by Spain in 1795, and repeatedly contested during the Peninsular War. Because of its strategic importance, the vast Sant Ferran Fortress was constructed overlooking the town — today, it is the largest fortress in Europe and a unique visit.

Finally, to end the day, Figueres is also home to the Catalonia Toy Museum, a three-floor museum in the centre of town displaying historic children’s toys from medieval times to the early computer age.

Getting to Figueres

Figueres is well connected by train from Barcelona and Girona, making it an easy day trip. The town has two stations: the central Figueres station served by Regional trains, and the modern Figueres‑Vilafant AVE station on the outskirts, located about a 20‑minute walk from the town centre and close to the Sant Feran Fortress and Dalí Theatre Museum.

The Regional trains depart from Barcelona‑Sants, stopping at Barcelona‑Passeig de Gràcia, Girona, and other intermediate stations before reaching Figueres. There are two types of Regional service: the MD train, which makes fewer stops and offers more comfortable carriages with tables, arriving about 20 minutes faster; and the R11 train, which stops at every station along the route and takes approximately 1 hour 50 minutes.

The AVE high‑speed trains connect Barcelona‑Sants to Figueres‑Vilafant in just 50 minutes. From there, visitors can walk to the fortress or take local transport into the town centre.
