Description of the Osona Region

Osona is a scenic region in central Catalonia, with its capital in the medieval market town of Vic. The region had a population of 129,543 in 2001 and remains predominantly rural. It’s served by the R3 Rodalies railway line and local bus services, making it accessible for hikers without a car.

Osona straddles the provinces of Barcelona and Girona, with Vic located in the Barcelona province and the northern and eastern towns falling under Girona. The area is surrounded by plains, forests, and mountain ranges, offering some of the best hiking routes in Catalonia.

Many trails are reachable via the R3 Rodalies train, while others require a car—but they’re well worth the drive. I especially recommend Osona for autumn hiking near Barcelona, when the forests explode with colour and the mountains remain snow-free well into winter.

Parc Natural de les Guilleries-Savassona

The Guilleries-Savassona Natural Area is one of 12 protected zones managed by the Barcelona Provincial Council, covering 837 km². It borders the Collsacabra to the north, the Vic plains to the west, the Montseny foothills to the south, and the Selva region to the east.

This natural park includes the villages of Folgueroles, Sant Julià de Vilatorta, Tavèrnoles, Vilanova de Sau, Tavertet, Rupit, and Sant Sadurní d’Osormort. It’s part of the Network of Natural Parks and has been actively managed since 1998.

Serres de Milany-Santa Magdalena & Puigsacalm-Bellmunt

The Milany-Santa Magdalena and Puigsacalm-Bellmunt ranges form one of the most striking natural areas of the Pre-Pyrenees, alongside the Collsacabra. These forests are ideal for mushroom foraging and offer breathtaking views—especially in autumn when the foliage transforms.

The region includes the villages of Vidrà, Sant Pere de Torelló, Santa Maria de Besora, Orís, Sant Quirze de Besora, Sant Vicenç de Torelló, Montesquiu, Vallfogona de Ripollès, Ripoll, Vall d’en Bas, and la Riudaura.
