History of CaixaForum Barcelona

The building that houses CaixaForum Barcelona was originally constructed in 1911 as the Casaramona textile factory, commissioned by industrialist Casimir Casaramona i Puigcercós. Designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch, a leading figure in Catalan Modernist architecture, the factory is celebrated for its distinctive design and innovative use of materials.

Among the most striking architectural features of the Casaramona factory are its decorative brickwork, crenellated rooflines, and minaret-style towers, which blend industrial functionality with artistic expression. The building also incorporates natural light through skylights and open courtyards, reflecting early 20th-century ideals of worker well-being and modern design.

After the factory closed in 1919, the site served various roles—from a warehouse during the 1929 International Exposition to a police station in the 1940s. In 1963, la Caixa Bank acquired the building, and following a major renovation led by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki, it reopened in 2002 as CaixaForum.

Today, the building stands as a rare example of Barcelona’s industrial Modernism, showcasing how historic architecture can be repurposed into a vibrant cultural space.
