Santa Caterina Market History

The market stands on the site of a former convent, demolished in 1835. The square was once known as the Square of the Carts, famous for its pitcher fair held on the feast of Sant Domènec. The monks of Santa Caterina had a well believed to cure malaria — a legend that lives on in local lore.

Construction of the market began in 1844 and was inaugurated in 1848, making it one of the oldest historic markets in Barcelona. Architect Josep Mas Vila envisioned a grand design to rival El Born Market and La Boqueria, though the full plan was never realized.

During the 1940s, Santa Caterina became a vital supply center for nearby towns like Badalona, Santa Coloma de Gramenet, and El Masnou, with trams bringing shoppers to its doors. The most recent renovation in 2005 transformed the market into a vibrant hub of Barcelona fresh produce, culture, and design.

The 2005 refurbishment by EMBT Architects introduced the now-iconic ceramic roof, made of 325,000 brightly colored tiles that evoke the fruits and vegetables sold below. The structure blends modernist architecture with preserved elements like the 1988 porticoed façade and original side walls. The south-facing glass wall adds a contemporary touch to this Barcelona architectural landmark.

Inside, you’ll find a wide variety of stalls offering fresh fish, seafood, poultry, meat, vegetables, nuts, legumes, and more. Several cafeterías and tapas bars make it a great spot for a snack or lunch, making it one of the best Barcelona markets with restaurants.
