About Barcelona Beaches - Poblenou from Port Olímpic to Forum

Poblenou, Besòs and Fòrum make up the main residents’ beach area in Barcelona. What is now a lively coastal neighbourhood was once one of the city’s most important industrial zones, filled with factories, workshops and warehouses.

This entire stretch of coastline was transformed for the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics, when the old industrial land was redeveloped into the Olympic Village. Many former factories were replaced or converted into offices, lofts, cultural spaces and art studios, giving Poblenou its distinctive mix of modern architecture and industrial heritage.

The beaches from Port Olímpic to Port Fòrum are used mainly by local residents and, in my opinion, offer a far more relaxed experience than the busy tourist beaches of Barceloneta.

Running along the entire seafront is the wide boulevard Passeig Marítim de Bogatell, lined with seafood restaurants, beach bars and a limited number of blue‑zone parking spaces (payment required every two hours, with the ticket displayed on your dashboard).

The Poblenou coastline is divided into several distinct beaches, each with its own character:

Platja de la Nova Icària: The closest beach to Port Olímpic, known for its many beach volleyball courts and lively atmosphere.
Platja del Bogatell: A family‑friendly beach that is quieter than Barceloneta. It has reasonably priced chiringuitos and sunbeds. I recommend Xiringuito Escribà for a classic paella lunch or sunset dinner.
Platja de la Mar Bella: Features a designated nudist section and is known for being gay‑friendly. The beach is slightly more sheltered, making it popular with windsurfers on breezy days.
Platja de la Nova Mar Bella: A peaceful, low‑key beach ideal for reading or relaxing. It has fewer beach sellers than the more central beaches.
Platja de Llevant: The final beach in Barcelona city, located next to the Fòrum area. It includes a fenced‑off dog‑friendly zone during summer — a rarity, as dogs are normally banned from Barcelona beaches in peak season.

Visiting Barcelona Beaches - Poblenou from Port Olímpic to Forum

Passeig Marátim de la Bogatell/b> is a broad boulevard that is popular with skaters and runs along the beach front from Port Olímpic to Port Forum along the beach front.

Note: Since 2021 it is not allowed to smoke on the beach or in the sea of any of Barcelona city beaches.

WARNING: All of the beaches in Barcelona suffer from pickpockets and bag thieves. So do not for one minute leave your belongings out of site nor fall asleep or you will wake up with no bag or wallet. Bag thieves operate with impunity on these beaches and will run off with your bag. If you want to go to a beach where this is not an issue I recommend Castelldefels Platja which is only 20 minutes on the train from the centre of Barcelona.

Beach Xiringuitos & Restaurants

The Poblenou coastline has a good selection of seasonal xiringuitos (beach bars) and seafood restaurants along the promenade. Many offer sunbeds, cocktails, paella and relaxed outdoor dining with sea views.

What to take with you for Barcelona Beaches - Poblenou from Port Olímpic to Forum

There are multiple bicycle anchorage points along the seafront from Port Olímpic to Fòrum, but this area can suffer from pickpockets and bicycle theft. Even locked bikes may be targeted, so avoid leaving a bicycle unattended for long periods. During the busy summer months, bicycles are not permitted on the sand.

Remember that beachwear is not permitted away from the seafront. Walking through the streets of Barcelona in a bikini or without a T‑shirt can result in a fine, so bring appropriate clothing if you plan to leave the beach area.

For visitors with reduced mobility, Platja de la Nova Icària offers an adapted changing room and a designated assisted‑bathing area during the summer season. These facilities provide support for entering and exiting the water safely.

The entire stretch of beaches from Port Olímpic to Fòrum is easily reached using the Barcelona Metro Yellow Line (L4). Each beach has a nearby station, making public transport the simplest way to arrive.
