About the Barcelona Port Cable Car

The Barcelona Port Cable Car, officially known as the Transbordador Aeri del Port, is a 1.3 km aerial tramway connecting Barceloneta Beach near Hotel W to Miramar on Montjuïc hill. This historic cable car in Barcelona offers a thrilling ride with panoramic views of the city, harbor, and coastline.

Often referred to as the Barcelona sky tram or gondola ride over Port Vell, it glides above the Port Vell Marina and the Maremagnum Shopping Complex, with a central support tower at the World Trade Center near the cruise terminals.

History of the Transbordador Aeri del Port

The Port Cable Car was the first of Barcelona’s cable cars, originally designed for the 1929 World Exhibition but completed in 1931. It remains one of the most iconic ways to travel between Montjuïc and Barceloneta.

The system includes three stations:

Torre de Sant Sebastià (San Sebastian Tower): Located in Barceloneta, this 78.4-meter tower includes a boarding platform and once housed a rooftop restaurant.
Torre Jaume I (Jaime I Tower): The central support tower stands 107 meters tall at the World Trade Center pier. Although it no longer serves as a stop, it’s one of the tallest aerial tramway towers in the world.
Miramar Station: Built into the side of Montjuïc mountain, this station is located near the Miramar viewpoint and Hotel Miramar. Above it sits the Terraza Miramar restaurant with sweeping views of the port.

During the Spanish Civil War, the cable car was dismantled and the towers were repurposed as watchtowers. In 1963, Teleféricos de Barcelona reopened the system, which has operated (with a brief refurbishment in the 1990s) ever since.

The system uses two 19-passenger cabins suspended from a static cable and pulled by a running cable. The motor is housed in the Miramar station, anchored into the mountain 56 meters above sea level.

Visiting Transbordador Aeri del Port

The Barcelona Port Cable Car ride lasts approximately 10 minutes and reaches an altitude of 70 meters. It offers some of the best views of Port Vell, El Raval, El Gòtic, and the Barcelona coastline.

Tip: The San Sebastian Tower in Barceloneta often has long queues. For a quicker boarding experience, start your journey from the Miramar Station on Montjuïc.

Accessability & What to bring for a trip in the Transbordador Aeri del Port

Accessibility: The San Sebastian Tower in Barceloneta has a lift for wheelchair users and pushchairs. However, the Miramar Station on Montjuïc is not step-free and requires navigating stairs.

Restrictions: Bicycles, large bags, and suitcases are not permitted on the cable cars.

What to bring: A camera or phone for photos.

Getting to the Transbordador Aeri del Port

To reach the San Sebastian Tower, take the Metro L4 (Yellow Line) to Barceloneta Station. For the Miramar Station on Montjuïc, use the TMB Funicular de Montjuïc from Paral·lel Metro Station.

Use a T-Casual or Hola Barcelona travel card for the metro and funicular. Note: the Transbordador Aeri del Port requires a separate ticket.
