The Olympic and Sports Museum in Barcelona, also known as the Joan Antoni Samaranch Olympic legacy museum, showcases Barcelona 1992 Olympic exhibits in an immersive and educational format.

Museo Olímpico y del Deporte Joan Antoni Samaranch is a newer museum opened in Barcelona on Montjuïc mountain next to the Olympic Stadium. The museum is built into the side of the mountain and has a floor underground.

The Olympic and Sports Museum History

The Olympic and Sports Museum was located in Montjuïc Olympic Stadium but moved to a custom building next to the Olympic Stadium in 2007.

In 2010 the Olympic and Sports Museum was renamed in honour of Juan Antonio Samaranch, a Spanish Citizen and president of the International Olympic Committee from 1980 to 2001. Juan Antonio was a key figure during the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics.

Visiting Olympic and Sports Museum in Barcelona

The museum is dedicated to the 1992 Olympics and has a vast collection of artefacts from the Olympics and vintage sports equipment displayed in a very modern space that tells the stories about many of Spain's sporting champions, especially those from the 1992 Olympics.

This interactive Olympic museum for kids features video games, tactile displays, and multimedia exhibits, making it a family-friendly Olympic museum on Montjuïc.

It’s one of the few sports museums with accessibility in Barcelona, offering ramps, lifts, and wheelchair access.

Allow one to two hours to fully explore this Museum.

This Museum is engaging for children because of the interactive displays, video games based learning and tactile displays.

Tuesday to Saturday: 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.
Sunday and Public holidays: 10:00 am to 2:30 pm.
Closed: Mondays, 1 January, 1st, 1st May, 25-26 December.

Accessibility & What to bring to the Olympic and Sports Museum in Barcelona

Museu Olimpic Esport Joan Antoni Samaranch is a museum with exhibits on two floors linked by a ramp on the way down then an escalator to exit or lift to exit. For people with reduced mobility or with push chairs the museum is totally accessible and has a wheelchair available for visitors who need one.

Backpacks and luggage must be left in the lockers situated beside reception. However I was allowed in with my small 10L museum rucksack.

There is bicycle anchorage outside the entrance to the museum.

The Barcelona Bus Touristic Red Route Stops in the Montjuïc Olympic Zone in front of the Olympic Stadium. From Here it is a 200m walk to the Museum.

The TMB 150 bus stops at the Montjuïc Olympic Stadium. From Here it is a 200m walk to the Museum.

Walking 1.4km from Plaça España on TMB Metro on the green (L3) and red (L2) lines. Walk towards MNAC Palau nacional building. You can use the escalators to ascend or descend the different terraced levels. When you get to the last terrace area the escalator to go up the MNAC can be found to the right of the terrace level walking past a patio bar. Walk down the right side of MNAC building and ascend the last escalator to emerge in front of the Olympic Stadium. follow the road round to the right of the Olympic Stadium for another 200m

Walk from TMB Metro Foc on the light blue (L10) line following Carrer de Foc to the stadium (1.5 Km).

Walk from Montjuïc TMB Funicular station along Avenida d'Estadí (550 m).
