About Tagamanent Castle Summit

Rising above the Congost Valley on the western slopes of Montseny, the Turó del Tagamanent is one of the most atmospheric summits in the Montseny Natural Park. The peak has been a strategic lookout since prehistoric times and later became home to the fortified Romanesque church of Santa Maria del Tagamanent, medieval farmhouses, and centuries‑old tracks linking mills, ice wells and isolated rural settlements.

The summit sits on the wide plateau of Pla de la Calma, a high, windswept landscape of crop fields, beech and oak forest, and scattered masies that once formed a small mountain hamlet. Today it is one of the most rewarding mountain hikes near Barcelona, reachable in around one hour by train to Sant Martí de Centelles.

The ascent to Tagamanent can be made from several directions, including the classic climb from Sant Martí de Centelles or the alternative approach from Figaró. Both routes offer long, steady climbs through forest, open viewpoints and traditional Montseny rural architecture.

Santa Maria del Tagamanent — History of a Fortified Mountain Church

The earliest written reference to Santa Maria del Tagamanent dates to 993 AD. In 1098, Viscount Folc de Cardona donated the church to the abbey of Santa Fe de Conques with the intention of establishing a priory, although this never materialised. The church later passed to the monastery of Sant Pere de Casserres, which administered it until 1331.

From the 14th century onward, Santa Maria del Tagamanent belonged to the bishopric of Vic, with Santa Eugènia del Congost as its suffragan parish until 1878. Over the following centuries the church was gradually abandoned, eventually falling into ruin. Today, the remains are preserved by the Diputació de Barcelona to prevent further deterioration.

The church retains its Romanesque character with subtle Gothic elements and occupies a dramatic grassy platform at the summit of the Turó del Tagamanent. Its elevated position on a natural escarpment made it ideal as a fortified church and defensive lookout over the Congost corridor.

Visiting Tagamanent Castle Summit from Sant Martí de Centelles

This circular route climbs steadily from Sant Martí de Centelles, passing the abandoned Puig‑Agut farmhouse before reaching the summit area and the ruins of Santa Maria del Tagamanent. From here, the views open across the Vallès plain, the Osona plateau, the Congost Valley and the dramatic Cingles de Bertí cliffs. On clear winter days, the snow‑covered Pyrenees mountains and the unmistakable silhouette of Montserrat are visible.

After the summit, the trail descends to the historic Bellver farmhouse, now home to a rural restaurant serving seasonal Montseny cuisine. Continuing the loop, the route passes the Parc Etnològic de Tagamanent – Casa Museu L’Agustí, a preserved farmhouse museum with limited opening hours, before crossing the farmsteads of El Bellit and the ruined Fondrats on the return to Sant Martí de Centelles.

Allow 6–8 hours to complete the full 16 km circular route, including time for viewpoints, photos and a possible lunch stop at Bellver.

Parc Etnològic de Tagamanent — Casa Museu L’Agustí Hours

The Casa Museu L’Agustí is open on weekends and public holidays from 10:30 to 16:30. Entry costs 4 €. Audio‑visual guided tours are offered at 10:30 and 16:30. The Agustí family has farmed the Pla de la Calma since the 12th century, and the museum preserves the traditional rural life of Montseny.

Hiking to Tagamanent with a Dog

The route is suitable for dogs and follows mostly forested paths through oak, beech and occasional pine. In spring and early summer, be aware of pine processionary caterpillars in pine areas. Winter is the safest season for dogs. Around the summit and Bellver farmhouse, expect free‑roaming cats and grazing cattle. If planning to eat at the restaurant, request an outdoor table or ask whether dogs are allowed inside.

Best Time of Year to Hike Tagamanent from Sant Martí de Centelles

Autumn and winter are the best seasons to hike to the summit of Turó del Tagamanent via this route. Autumn brings cool temperatures, stable weather and colourful beech and oak foliage across the Pla de la Calma. Visibility is excellent, making it easier to enjoy long‑distance views towards Montserrat, Osona and the Pyrenees.

Winter is equally rewarding. The air is crisp, the trails are quiet, and on some days you may see light patches of snow on the upper slopes and around the summit meadow. The route remains fully accessible in normal winter conditions, and the colder months also reduce the risk of encountering pine processionary caterpillars.

Because the trailhead is only about one hour by train from Barcelona, this hike is ideal for maximising the available daylight hours during the shorter winter days.

This is a medium‑difficulty mountain hike in the Montseny range. A small rucksack with essentials and a basic first‑aid kit is sufficient. A waterproof jacket is optional depending on the weather forecast.

Carry 2–3 litres of water. Additional water may be available at the El Bellit farmhouse if open.
