About Adahuesca Medieval Village

Adahuesca is the perfect village for an overnight stay when visiting Alquézar and the Salto de Bierge, thanks to its ideal location between the two. While it’s possible to stay in Alquézar, prices are higher and availability is limited in high season. Near the Salto de Bierge there is only one hostel, so accommodation options are very restricted. In contrast, Adahuesca offers peaceful surroundings, fair prices and a relaxed, non‑touristy atmosphere.

When I stayed in Adahuesca, we rented a four‑bed apartment at an excellent price and enjoyed a three‑course dinner in the garden of the local restaurant — great food without the inflated tourist markup you often find in Alquézar.

I recommend booking an apartment at Apartamentos Vino Tinto Adahuesca. It was perfect for our group: spacious, comfortable and ideally located. We had dinner at Restaurante Tomate Rosa in the garden, and the combination of good food and a quiet village setting meant I slept incredibly well. The apartment worked out at around €25 per person, and dinner was about €20.

Another option is Albergue Crux, a friendly hostel where we stopped for breakfast at 9 am before starting the day’s hike.

The old quarter of Adahuesca is compact and full of traditional architecture. Many façades feature the distinctive semi‑circular arch doorways typical of the region, giving the village a timeless medieval charm.

Visiting Adahuesca Medieval Village

If you’re staying overnight in Adahuesca, you may not have much time to explore — but when I visited, I slept so well that I woke up at 6 am and wandered out for a sunrise walk. The village is small, peaceful and perfect for a quiet early‑morning stroll.

Highlights of Adahuesca Village:

Mirador Adahuesca: A viewpoint overlooking the Sierra y Cañones de Guara mountains, located on the former site of the Castillo de los Santos. This 11th‑century religious‑military complex once served as a lookout controlling access to Alquézar castle.
Plaza San Pedro 4, 22147 Adahuesca
Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Treviño: A 13th‑century Romanesque church with archivolts, a covered porch and numerous sculpted corbels. Gothic elements were added later, and medieval mural remains depicting the apostles were discovered inside. A nearby cemetery suggests the church once served a larger settlement.

Casa Loscertales: An ancestral home with a defensive character, named after the Certero family — mountain shepherds famed for their slingshot accuracy, who aided Pedro I in the Battle of Alcoraz. The house features a stone lower floor, brick upper floors, semi‑circular arch doorways and a gallery of rooms on the top level.

Take a jacket to the restaurant in the evening because the garden can get a bit chilly once the sun goes down.

Getting to Adahuesca Medieval Village

Access to Adahuesca is by car only. There are no parking restrictions in the village, so simply use your best judgement when choosing a spot.

To reach Adahuesca from Alquézar, follow the HU‑352 out of the village and join the A‑1233 toward Radiquero. Continue along this road until you reach Adahuesca.

The drive from Alquézar to Adahuesca takes approximately 10–15 minutes.

Where to stay in Adahuesca Medieval Village

For a relaxed weekend, I recommend staying in the village of Adahuesca, just a 10‑minute drive from Alquézar. It’s quieter, easier to book, and perfectly placed for combining the Alcanadre River with the River Vero & Alquézar hike.

Alquézar itself is stunning but also extremely popular — especially in spring and summer — which means accommodation can be expensive and books out quickly. If you want to stay there, reserve well in advance; otherwise, Adahuesca is the ideal alternative.

When I did this weekend trip, I stayed at Apartamentos Vino Tinto, a spacious four‑person apartment with its own on‑site restaurant, Restaurante Tomate Rosa. Dinner in their garden terrace was the perfect way to end a long day of river hiking.
