Parc de la Ciutat is one of Tarragona’s largest green spaces, a 12.9‑acre urban park located in the lower part of the city. Today it serves as a quiet, family‑friendly retreat with children’s play areas, shaded walking paths, picnic zones, benches, Mediterranean trees and pockets of Roman archaeological remains. Locals use it for morning walks, reading in the shade and weekend family outings.

At the heart of the park stands the Quinta de Sant Rafael, a 1912 modernist residence designed by architect Juli Maria Fossas i Martínez. Commissioned by Marià Puig i Valls as a private home for his brother Rafael, the building originally featured two floors, an octagonal tower and a landscaped garden with a well. Although the structure covers only 366 m², it was once the centrepiece of a much larger estate.

After decades of neglect and several fires, the Tarragona City Council began restoration work in 2008 with the intention of converting the Quinta into a nature interpretation centre. However, the project stalled, and the building remains abandoned, a striking example of early 20th‑century modernist architecture awaiting a new purpose.

The original estate grounds were planted with a wide variety of trees and shrubs, many labelled for educational purposes. Sculptures from the 1888 Barcelona Universal Exhibition were also displayed here, reflecting Rafael Valls’ connection to the event. Although parts of the estate were later developed, the surviving gardens now form the core of Parc de la Ciutat, preserving fragments of Tarragona’s botanical and cultural heritage.

Visiting Tarragona Parc de la Ciutat & Quinta de Sant Rafael

Parc de la Ciutat is open daily from 07:00 to 23:30 and offers a peaceful natural environment in the middle of Tarragona. The park is home to a rich variety of Mediterranean flora, including pines, cypresses, plane trees, olive trees, palms, laurel, acanthus, rosemary and aromatic shrubs. Many of these species date back to the original landscaped estate of the Quinta de Sant Rafael.

The park also supports a small but lively urban fauna. Visitors may spot sparrows, blackbirds, collared doves, robins, greenfinches and the occasional kestrel circling overhead. Lizards bask on stone walls during warm months, and squirrels are often seen darting between the trees. The combination of mature shade trees and open lawns makes the park a pleasant micro‑habitat for birds and insects.

Several walking paths cross the park, offering shaded routes ideal for a quiet stroll or a break from sightseeing. Families will find a well‑maintained children’s playground, while the open lawns and benches make it a popular spot for picnics. Scattered Roman remains add an unexpected archaeological touch to the landscape.

Although the Quinta de Sant Rafael remains closed and derelict, it can be viewed from the outside and is an interesting stop for those who enjoy modernist architecture or abandoned heritage sites.

Accessibility to Tarragona Parc de la Ciutat & Quinta de Sant Rafael

For the Tarragona day trip I pack a small 10L rucksack with a fleece jersey and if the weather forecast says rain, a waterproof poncho. Wear comfortable shoes so that your ankles are not sprained on the cobble streets.

Parc de la Ciutat is a large outdoor green space with several entrances, but it is not fully adapted for visitors with reduced mobility. Some access points include steps or uneven transitions from the pavement into the park.

For visitors who require a step‑free approach, the most suitable entrance is located on Avinguda Quinta de Sant Rafael. This access point offers the smoothest, most level entry into the park, although the internal gravel path terrain may still presents limitations.
