About Taga Summit from Ribes de Freser

Taga Summit can be reached as a circular 17km MEDIUM or MEDIUM‑HARD mountain hike starting and ending at Ribes de Freser in the El Ripollès region of the Pyrenees mountains. This is one of the most popular summit hikes in Girona province and a great option for hikers looking for train-accessible Pyrenees hiking routes near Barcelona.

Taga is a 2035‑metre summit rising above the Ripollès valley, with Ribes de Freser at 899 metres. The total elevation gain of 1157 metres earns this route a solid MEDIUM‑HARD classification, making it ideal for hikers seeking a challenging high‑altitude hike in the Catalan Pyrenees.

From RENFE Ribes de Freser, walk toward the town centre parallel to the river. At the end of the tree‑lined boulevard, turn off and begin the ascent into the forest, starting the long uphill climb typical of mountain hikes in Ripollès.

The uphill climb takes you through cattle‑grazing hills and continues as a steady, demanding ascent along the Serrat de Conivella ridgeline. At the summit, you are rewarded with spectacular 360‑degree panoramic views of the Spanish Pyrenees from the iconic Taga summit cross monument. On clear days, this is one of the best viewpoint hikes in the Pyrenees.

This route should only be attempted by hikers with a MEDIUM level of physical fitness. Good time management is essential to ensure arrival at the station before the last train back to Barcelona, especially for those doing this as a day trip from Barcelona.

I completed the Taga summit route from Ribes de Freser in 6 hours as an experienced mountain hiker, which is typical for this type of summit hike in the Pyrenees.

Visiting Taga Summit from Ribes de Freser

Allow 6–9 hours to complete the route depending on physical fitness. This is one of the most rewarding day hikes in Ripollès and a great choice for hikers wanting a quieter alternative to the more famous Núria valley routes.

TIP: Avoid wearing red clothing. When I completed this route in summer, several curious cows followed a hiker wearing bright red!

The best time to hike Taga is June to August, when the meadows are full of wild flowers and the forests are lush and green. Summer conditions make this one of the best mountain hikes in Girona province.

Taga Summit as a Winter Snow Route

Although I have never completed this route as a full winter snow hike, the Taga summit is an excellent candidate for snowshoe hiking or crampon-assisted winter ascents thanks to its open ridgelines and wide mountain plains. However, the total distance of approximately 18 km makes this a HARD winter route, especially when moving through deep snow.

Due to the limited time window between the arrival of the first train and the departure of the last train of the day, completing the entire loop in winter conditions may not be physically possible for most hikers. For this reason, an overnight stay in Ribes de Freser is strongly recommended if attempting this as a winter snowshoe or crampon hike.

Hiking to Taga Summit from Ribes de Freser with a Dog

The route begins in mixed forests of oak, beech and pine, interspersed with mountain plains full of cattle. If you see pines in spring or summer, be aware of the poisonous Pine Processionary Caterpillars . The upper half of the route crosses open plains and rocky outcrops. This is a dog‑friendly hike in the Pyrenees with no major obstacles for your furry companion.

Where to Eat in Ribes de Freser

Ribes de Freser has many bars and restaurants. About 2 minutes from the Renfe train station is Bar Gusi, serving snacks, drinks and vegan hamburgers — a convenient stop before or after your Taga summit hike.

Getting to Taga Summit from Ribes de Freser

Address: Estacion de RENFE, Ribes de Freser, 17534

The route starts and ends at Ribes de Freser Renfe Rodalies station, approximately two hours from Barcelona on the R3 Rodalies rail line. This is the only train route that reaches Ribes de Freser, making it the sole public transport option, apart from a bus, for hikers travelling from Barcelona to start the Taga summit hike.

Ribes de Freser is an unstaffed Renfe station, so it is best to buy a return ticket in Barcelona before boarding. You can also purchase tickets on the train from the ticket inspector at the same price as the ticket machines. Since the R3 is the only rail connection to the Ripollès region, trains can be busy on weekends, so plan your timing accordingly.
