About Tagamanent castle ruin from Figaró

The Turó del Tagamanent rises above the Congost corridor on the western edge of the Montseny Natural Park, a landscape shaped by centuries of rural life, forest paths and isolated farmhouses. The summit is crowned by the ruined Romanesque church of Santa Maria del Tagamanent, once a fortified mountain sanctuary overlooking the valleys below.

This route approaches Tagamanent from the village of Figaró, climbing gradually through the shaded Vallcàrquera river valley — a quieter, greener and more secluded ascent than the popular climb from Sant Martí de Centelles. The trail follows old forest tracks, waterfalls, stone farmhouses and the ridge of the Serra de les Sapines before reaching the historic Bellver farmhouse restaurant and the final climb to the summit.

From Tagamanent, the descent follows the GR‑5 long‑distance path to Sant Martí de Centelles, completing a rewarding linear traverse across two valleys and some of the most traditional rural landscapes in Montseny.

Santa Maria del Tagamanent — History of a Mountain Sanctuary

The earliest reference to Santa Maria del Tagamanent dates to 993 AD. In 1098, Viscount Folc de Cardona donated the church to Santa Fe de Conques with the intention of establishing a priory, although this never materialised. Administration later passed to the monastery of Sant Pere de Casserres, which governed the site until 1331.

From the 14th century onward, the church belonged to the bishopric of Vic, with Santa Eugènia del Congost as its suffragan parish until 1878. Over time the building was abandoned and fell into ruin. Today, the remains are preserved by the Diputació de Barcelona to prevent further deterioration.

The church retains its Romanesque structure with subtle Gothic elements and occupies a dramatic grassy platform at the summit of the Turó del Tagamanent. Its elevated position made it ideal as a fortified lookout controlling the Congost valley.

Visiting Tagamanent castle ruin from Figaró

The hike begins at Figaró R3 station and immediately crosses the Congost River via a high bridge with views over the village. From here, the route follows the Ruta dels Arbres de Vallcàrquera, a shaded riverside path lined with oaks, alders and small cascades. The Vallcàrquera waterfall and pools make this one of the most scenic low‑altitude sections in Montseny.

The trail enters the small hamlet of Vallcàrquera, home to beautifully preserved stone farmhouses and the mountain chapel of Ermita de Sant Pere de Vallcàrquera. After passing Can Puig farmhouse, the route climbs steeply onto a gravel track that transitions into a forested mountain trail.

The ascent continues along the ridge of the Serra de les Sapines, offering intermittent viewpoints over the Congost valley and the surrounding foothills. The trail eventually reaches the historic Bellver farmhouse, now a rural restaurant serving seasonal organic dishes sourced from the surrounding farms.

From Bellver, a final climb leads to the summit area and the ruins of Santa Maria del Tagamanent. The views extend across the Vallès plain, the Osona plateau and the Congost valley. On clear winter days, the Montserrat massif and the snow‑covered Pyrenees mountains are visible.

The descent follows the GR‑5 long‑distance trail to Sant Martí de Centelles, passing the ruined Can Amet farmhouse before reaching the village.

Allow 6–8 hours to complete the full 14 km linear route.

Hiking to Tagamanent with a Dog

This route is suitable for dogs and includes long forested sections along the Vallcàrquera river, which dogs usually enjoy. In spring and early summer, be aware of pine processionary caterpillars in pine areas. Around the summit and Bellver farmhouse, expect free‑roaming cats and grazing cattle. If planning to eat at Bellver, request an outdoor table or ask whether dogs are allowed inside.

Best Time of Year to Hike Tagamanent from Figaró

This route can be enjoyed all year round thanks to its varied terrain and the sheltered nature of the Vallcàrquera river valley. Each season offers something different, but the most vibrant period is spring and early summer, when the riverbanks are lined with wildflowers and the forest is at its greenest. The shaded valley keeps temperatures comfortable even on warmer days.

Autumn brings cooler weather and a mix of golden tones in the oak and beech forests, while winter offers crisp air, quiet trails and clear views from the summit. The Figaró ascent remains accessible in normal winter conditions, making this one of the more reliable year‑round hikes in Montseny.

If you enjoy flowing water, lush vegetation and a lively forest atmosphere, plan your visit between April and June. For long‑distance views and peaceful trails, October to February is ideal.

This is a medium‑difficulty mountain route. A small rucksack with essentials and a basic first‑aid kit is sufficient. A waterproof jacket is optional depending on the weather forecast.
