1929 Barcelona International Exposition

The original stadium on Montjuïc Mountain was designed by architect Pere Domènech i Roura for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition. However, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) halted those ambitions, and the 1936 Olympics were instead held in Berlin.

Following the war, Spain entered a period of dictatorship under General Francisco Franco. During this time, Lluís Companys, President of Catalonia, was imprisoned in Montjuïc Castle and executed by firing squad on October 15, 1940. His legacy is honored in the stadium’s current name: Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys.

In the 1950s, the stadium regained prominence as the centerpiece of the 1955 Mediterranean Games. It also hosted the 1957 Copa del Generalísimo final, a historic football match between FC Barcelona and RCD Espanyol, the city’s two major clubs.

1968 to 1982 Spanish Grand Prix and Motorsport

During the 1970s, the stadium fell into disuse and its grandstands deteriorated. However, it found new life as a paddock for motorsport events, most notably the Spanish Grand Prix. The Montjuïc Circuit, a 3.7 km anticlockwise street circuit around the mountain, was first used in 1969 and became known for its challenging layout—half slow, half fast.
