About Refugi 307: A Hidden Civil War Shelter in Poble Sec
Barcelona was the first city in the world to suffer strategic aerial bombardment of civilians. During the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), Francoist forces—supported by the Italian and German air forces—targeted key infrastructure like rail hubs, industrial zones, and the port.
To protect the population, over 1,400 anti-aircraft shelters were constructed. Among them, Refugi 307 is one of the few that survives today. This underground war shelter in Poble Sec, carved into the base of Montjuïc mountain, was excavated by local civilians and stands as a powerful symbol of resilience.
The shelter has three entrances on Nou de la Rambla and nearly 400 meters of tunnels with a height of 2.1 meters and widths between 1.5 and 2 meters. It could accommodate up to 2,000 people, seated on benches along the walls. Facilities included toilets, a natural spring, a nursery, and a first aid room for treating shrapnel wounds. It was connected to the city’s electric grid and sewer system, with a backup diesel generator offering 8 hours of autonomy.
This shelter is significantly larger than the Gracia Civil War Shelter beneath Plaça del Diamant.
