About Refugi 307: A Hidden Civil War Shelter in Poble Sec

Barcelona was the first city in the world to suffer strategic aerial bombardment of civilians. During the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), Francoist forces—supported by the Italian and German air forces—targeted key infrastructure like rail hubs, industrial zones, and the port.

To protect the population, over 1,400 anti-aircraft shelters were constructed. Among them, Refugi 307 is one of the few that survives today. This underground war shelter in Poble Sec, carved into the base of Montjuïc mountain, was excavated by local civilians and stands as a powerful symbol of resilience.

The shelter has three entrances on Nou de la Rambla and nearly 400 meters of tunnels with a height of 2.1 meters and widths between 1.5 and 2 meters. It could accommodate up to 2,000 people, seated on benches along the walls. Facilities included toilets, a natural spring, a nursery, and a first aid room for treating shrapnel wounds. It was connected to the city’s electric grid and sewer system, with a backup diesel generator offering 8 hours of autonomy.

This shelter is significantly larger than the Gracia Civil War Shelter beneath Plaça del Diamant.

Visiting Refugi307 Underground Air Raid Shelter

Refugi 307 is one of only two Spanish Civil War bomb shelters in Barcelona open to the public. Managed by MUHBA (Museu d’Història de Barcelona), it offers guided tours every Sunday, making it a must-see for those interested in Barcelona civil war history tours.

Inside, you’ll see original features such as:

  • Wooden benches lining the walls where residents waited out air raids
  • First aid station used to treat minor injuries, especially shrapnel wounds
  • Nursery room for children and families
  • Toilet cubicles and sanitation systems connected to the city’s sewer network
  • Natural spring that provided drinking water to shelter occupants
  • Diesel generator room with 8 hours of autonomy in case of power failure

Throughout the tour, guides share stories of how the Poble Sec community organized and excavated the shelter, offering insight into the resilience and solidarity of Barcelona’s citizens during the Spanish Civil War. The atmosphere is immersive, with low lighting and preserved architecture that transports you back to the 1930s.

This experience is ideal for those interested in Barcelona civil war history tours, hidden historical sites, and Spanish Civil War museum experiences.

Advance booking is essential due to limited capacity. Tickets can be reserved via the official MUHBA website.

The other accessible shelter is the Gracia Air Raid Shelter.
