Hotel W Barcelona, known locally as La Vela (“the sail”), is one of the most recognisable landmarks on the Barcelona coastline. Designed by architect Ricardo Bofill, the sail‑shaped tower stands at the southern tip of Barceloneta on land reclaimed from the sea as part of the port’s breakwater extension. Construction finished in 2009, and the hotel has since become an icon of the city’s modern skyline.

The building’s position on the harbour wall creates a unique microclimate: the south side of the hotel often channels gusty winds along the breakwater, while the north side opens directly onto Sant Sebastià Beach (Platja de Sant Sebastià), one of Barcelona’s longest and most historic beaches.

The hotel’s development was controversial at the time, as Spanish coastal law generally prohibits new buildings within 100 metres of the shoreline. The land is owned by the Port Authority of Barcelona, and the tendering process for the project was criticised for its lack of transparency. Despite this, the W has become a defining feature of the modern waterfront.

Today the W is known for its luxury rooms, rooftop views, restaurants and summer pool parties, as well as its dramatic silhouette visible from almost every beach in the city.

Visiting Hotel W Barceloneta & Sant Sebastián Beach

Sant Sebastià Beach stretches along the north side of the hotel and is one of Barcelona’s broadest beaches. Historically it was a popular nudist beach, although nudism has become far less common in recent years due to the area’s gentrification and the presence of the hotel. You may still see occasional nude sunbathers, but it is no longer considered a dedicated nudist zone.

The beachfront here is excellent for swimming, paddleboarding and windsurfing. The shape of the harbour wall and the open sea exposure make Sant Sebastià one of the better spots in the city for water sports, with several schools offering lessons and rentals.

The breakwater behind the hotel is a popular walking and running route, offering panoramic views of the coastline and the open Mediterranean. The path is fully accessible and makes for a scenic stroll at sunrise or sunset.

Even if you’re not staying at the W, the area is worth visiting for its architecture, beach access, sea views and the unique perspective it offers on Barcelona’s coastline.

In summer the Hotel W hosts terrace and pool parties. Drinks prices reflect the hotel’s exclusive location. Entry is usually via a guest list.

Accessability to Hotel W Barceloneta & Sant Sebastián Beach

There are multiple bicycle anchorage points along the beachfront, but Barceloneta is known for opportunistic theft. Even locked bikes can be targeted, so avoid leaving a bicycle unattended for long periods. During the summer months, bicycles are not permitted on the sand when the beaches become crowded.

The sea wall behind the hotel has ramp access and is easy to navigate for visitors with reduced mobility. The elevated walkway is popular with runners, walkers and cyclists.

As with the rest of Barcelona, beachwear is not permitted away from the beachfront. Walking through the neighbourhood in swimwear—especially without a shirt—can result in a fine, although enforcement is generally relaxed close to the beach.

Bus Routes:

V15: Runs along Passeig Joan de Borbó, connecting Barceloneta with Via Laietana, Eixample and Gràcia.
V19: Stops near Barceloneta and links the waterfront with the Born, Eixample and Sant Gervasi.
47: Connects Barceloneta with Plaça Catalunya and the upper city.
59: A seafront route linking Barceloneta, Port Olímpic and Zona Universitària.
D20: Runs along Passeig Marítim, connecting the beaches with Paral·lel and Ernest Lluch.

You can also reach the hotel via the Port Cable Car, which connects Montjuïc Hotel Miramar with the Barceloneta waterfront.
