About Weekend Getaway to Aragon Rivers I - Alquézar & Bierge

A spectacular weekend in the province of Huesca to enjoy River hiking in Alquézar and Bierge. An overnight stay in the medieval village of Adahuesca. I recommend this weekend trip for late spring or summer to enjoy the warm river water.

The best time of year to do this trip is May, June, July and August when the water is warm enough to swim.

Day 1 - Alquézar

Alquézar is a small village (poulation 300) with a big history and features in the top 10 of many rankings of Spain's most beutiful villages, achieving a UN tourism ranking for one of the best tourism villages of 2022.

Alquézar is situated on a limestone outcrop to the west of river Vero canyon in the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Natural Park and is based around a castle and church of Santa Maria, consecrated in 1099.

The village is Arabic in origin being reconquered by Spanish Christian forces during the expulsion of the Arabs from mainland Europe in the 10th Century. Today the village relies on tourism being a popular spot for hiking, canyoning, rock climbing and abseiling.

Between the villages of Lecina and Alquézar, the River Vero carves its way through calcareous rock forming impressive canyons and ravines dotted with hollows and caves. These are the result of water seeping through fractures in the ground and slowly dissolving the limestone.

Below you will find my recommended 13km circular hiking route through Alquézar village along the river Vero canyon walkways to the village of Asque. The route has several places to stop and swim.

Day 2 - Bierge

Bierge is a small village in Aragon near to the Catalan border whose electricity is provided by the daming of the Alcandre river producing a small lake behind the dam as well as a great river for hiking. The Sierra y Cañones de Guara Natural Park is polular for canyoning activities (Barranco del Formiga and the Barranco de La Peonera) but this route does not require any specialist protective equipment or a mountain guide. The route is known as Salto de Bierge.

Happy Exploring!
