Visit Mercat Central, Tarragona’s 1915 modernist food market near Rambla Nova. Fresh produce, local tapas and terrace bars make it ideal for breakfast, snacks or a relaxed early lunch
About Tarragona Central Market
The Mercat Central de Tarragona is the city’s main food market, a striking 1915 modernist building that continues to serve as a hub for fresh produce, local gastronomy and daily life. Located between Rambla Nova and the Colonial Forum, the market sits in a residential neighbourhood that blends modern Tarragona with its historic core.
The market was designed by architect Josep Maria Pujol i de Barberà, who used cast‑iron columns and large open naves to create a bright, spacious interior free of structural walls. This innovative design allowed for wide aisles and flexible stall layouts, making the Mercat Central one of the most modern markets of its time. The building occupies the former Plaça del Progrés and features three naves with façades opening onto Plaça Corsini and Carrer Cristòfor Colom.
The market’s architecture is reminiscent of Barcelona’s Born Market, sharing the same industrial‑modernist aesthetic of iron, glass and open space. Over the years, the Mercat Central has been carefully restored to preserve its original character while adapting to modern needs, including improved lighting, ventilation and accessibility.
Today, the market remains a lively meeting point for locals and visitors. Stalls sell seasonal fruit and vegetables, fresh fish, meat, nuts, cheeses, baked goods and regional delicacies. It’s a place where you can experience Tarragona’s food culture firsthand, from early‑morning shopping to mid‑day tapas on the surrounding terraces.

Visiting Tarragona Central Market
The Mercat Central is one of the best places in Tarragona for a relaxed breakfast, late‑morning tapas or a quick lunch. The surrounding Plaça Corsini is lined with terrace bars where you can enjoy coffee, pastries, seafood tapas or a glass of vermouth while watching the neighbourhood go about its day.
Inside the market, you’ll find stalls selling fresh fruit, nuts and snacks—ideal for stocking up before exploring the Roman sites or heading to the beach. The atmosphere is lively but not overwhelming, making it a pleasant stop even for casual visitors.
The market is also a great spot for photography, thanks to its cast‑iron structure, colourful produce displays and the contrast between modernist architecture and everyday life. It’s an easy detour from Rambla Nova and pairs well with visits to the Colonial Forum, the Roman Walls or the nearby shopping streets.

Accessibility to Tarragona Central Market
For a Tarragona day trip I carry a small 10 L rucksack with a fleece layer, and if rain is forecast, a lightweight waterproof poncho. Comfortable shoes are essential—the cobbled streets and long walks between Roman sites can be tough on your ankles.
Mercat Central de Tarragona is fully accessible and easy to navigate, with a spacious interior and wide aisles between stalls. The market sits slightly elevated above the surrounding streets, but access is straightforward from all sides.
From Carrer de Cristòfor Colom, visitors can enter via either a short flight of stairs or a gently sloped ramp. The entrance from Plaça de Corsini is completely at street level, providing step‑free access suitable for wheelchairs, mobility scooters and pushchairs.
Inside the market, the floor is flat and open, with plenty of room to move between stalls. Terrace bars around Plaça Corsini also offer level outdoor seating.
