Vall de Lord Hike: Sant Serni to Santuari de Lord Loop
14 km circular hike from Sant Serni del Grau to Santuari de Lord via caves, cliffs, ruins, and panoramic views of the Llosa del Cavall reservoir
About Vall de Lord circular Hiking route
This fantastic 14 km circular route begins at the Ermita de Sant Serni del Grau, a Romanesque mountain chapel dating from the 11th–12th century. The parking area is just five minutes’ drive from the centre of Sant Llorenç de Morunys, in the heart of the Vall de Lord — a scenic region about two hours from Barcelona.
Widely considered one of Catalonia’s most iconic hiking routes, the Vall de Lord loop blends dramatic scenery, historical landmarks, and varied terrain. From ancient chapels and cave formations to panoramic ridgelines and the legendary Santuari de Lord, it attracts seasoned hikers, weekend explorers, and photographers alike.
The trail climbs through rocky forest and Mediterranean shrubland to the Serra Larga ridgeline and the open mountain plain of Planella de Sóbol, passing cave formations and abandoned farmsteads. From this summit, the route descends along a narrow mountain ledge with dramatic cliffs into forested meadows, revealing views of the Pantà de la Llosa del Cavall reservoir.
As the path winds upward again, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the photogenic Mola de Lord rock formation. The final ascent follows a cliffside ledge with caves and strata formations, climbing steeply through a ravine to reach the sanctuary plateau.
At the top stands the Santuari de Lord, a spiritual and visual landmark perched atop the Mola de Lord. Originally built in the 11th–12th century and rebuilt in 1870 after its destruction during the First Carlist War, the sanctuary offers one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in the Catalan Pre-Pyrenees. From its terrace, you can gaze across the Serra de Busa, Els Bastets, and the reservoir far below. A commemorative cannon and peaceful church interior invite reflection at the summit.
The descent follows an ornate monks’ path and a rural road trail back to the parking area — a fitting end to a route that blends natural beauty, cultural heritage, and physical challenge.

Visiting Vall de Lord circular Hiking route
The route begins at a gravel parking area in front of the Ermita de Sant Serni del Grau, a Romanesque chapel nestled in the forest. After admiring the stonework, follow the road towards the mountains. About 400 m ahead, a second parking area appears on the right, where a path leads into the forest along the Camí ral de Solsona.
After 100 m, take the left-hand path, then fork left again after another 500 m. The Camí ral de Solsona climbs steadily through forest, brushland, and rocky outcrops, offering multiple viewpoints over the valley. As the ridgeline comes into view, watch for a right fork in the trail.
The path emerges onto a gravel road along the Serra Larga ridge. Turn left and follow the road, taking the right fork at the junction. A little further on, near an unnamed summit, there’s an optional detour to the left that descends to the Balma del Fornó cave — a worthwhile stop for those interested in geology.
Back on the main track, continue into the open mountain plain of Planella de Sóbol. In the centre of this plateau, beside the road, lie the Ruinas de Sóbol — abandoned farmhouse structures that make a great rest stop and photo opportunity.
As the road continues, look for a footpath branching left. At the treeline of Rasa de Vilamala, the terrain shifts from grassland to rocky shrubland. The trail descends into a ravine along a narrow ledge known as Pas mal. Navigation here requires attention — it’s easy to stray onto dead-end paths.
In this area, you can take a short detour to explore the Cova de les Esglesietes, a small cave with delicate stalactites. The main trail continues along the mountainside, weaving through low-density forest and strata with small cave formations. Eventually, it descends to a plain where the Torroella farmhouse ruin stands, its stone walls overtaken by giant vines.
Continue past the ruins, crossing the usually dry bed of the Rasa de Torroella. A gravel road parallels the riverbed through forest, gradually revealing views of the Pantà de la Llosa del Cavall reservoir. The trail reaches the Mirador de la Trona, a scenic viewpoint on a hairpin bend.
Take the left fork through the Camps de Solord meadow and continue to the Masia de Solord rural house. Turn left beside the house to ascend a footpath. Alternatively, the gravel road loops to the same point but adds distance. The trail crosses the road again and climbs to the Mirador Josep Cases, a viewpoint with a plaque and protective railings.
From here, follow the cliffside path known as Balmes del Verger, which offers dramatic views over the reservoir and small caves carved into the rock. As the path curves right, it appears to end — but a short, 3 m near-vertical scramble with hand and footholds leads to the summit. If this is too technical, backtrack to Mirador Josep Cases and take the alternative route to the Santuari de Lord.
At the top, the Camí de Sant Jaume leads across the Planella de Santuari plateau to the Mare de Déu de Lord church. This is a perfect place to rest and explore — the sanctuary is one of the most iconic viewpoints in Catalonia, offering sweeping views of the Serra de Busa, Els Bastets, and the reservoir below.
When ready to descend, take the gate to the left of the church façade and follow the paved path past the Ermita de Sant Pere Màrtir and the commemorative cannon. Nearby, you’ll see the winch used to haul supplies up to the sanctuary. Climb the rocks beside the cannon to reach a final viewpoint over the Pantà de la Llosa del Cavall from the Grau de Lord.
The descent follows the paved monks’ trail to the base of the winch station. From there, the road loops back to the original parking area via a small tunnel.

Hiking the Vall de Lord Route with a Dog
The route begins with a forested ascent through brushland to the Serra Larga ridge. In spring and summer, be aware of Pine Processionary Caterpillars, which are toxic to dogs. These are less common at higher altitudes and in autumn or winter.
Some sections of the descent involve narrow ledges and forested slopes, so dogs should be kept on a lead. The final ascent to the sanctuary includes a 2 m vertical scramble that most dogs cannot manage. A harness is essential if you plan to lift your dog here. Alternatively, backtrack to Mirador Josep Cases and use the longer but dog-friendly route to the summit.

What to take for Vall de Lord circular Hiking route
Pack a standard mountain hiking rucksack with layered clothing suitable for changing weather conditions. The route includes forested ascents, exposed ridgelines, and rocky ledges, so sturdy footwear with good grip is essential.
There are no water sources along the trail, so bring at least 3 litres of water per person. These mountains are dry year-round, and dehydration is a real risk — especially in warmer months.
Although the route has views of the Pantà de la Llosa del Cavall the trail does not go near the lake so there are no swimming spots. You may want to pack sun protection, snacks, and a small first aid kit. Trekking poles are helpful for balance on uneven terrain and during the descent from the sanctuary.
