Costa Brava Camí de Ronda I – Palamós to Begur

Hike the Camino de Ronda coastal trail between Palamós and Begur, discovering whitewashed villages, rugged cliffs and crystal‑blue coves along the GR‑92

by: Barcelona Travel Hacks Views: 5k

About a Weekend Getaway to Costa Brava I - Camí de Ronda

Catalonia has 580 kilometres of Mediterranean coastline, a mix of whitewashed villages, rugged cliffs, pine forests and wild coves. I’ve hiked almost all of the interesting sections, and my favourite is the 33‑kilometre stretch of the Costa Brava Camí de la Ronda between Palamós and Begur. This route offers unforgettable scenery: rocky headlands, picture‑perfect calas, Iberian ruins, castle viewpoints and a string of postcard fishing villages.

The Camí de la Ronda is part of the long‑distance GR‑92 (Gran Recorrido 92), which runs from the French border down the entire Catalan coast. The most spectacular section is here on the Costa Brava, where the trail weaves between pine forest, cliffs and turquoise water — easily among the best coastal trails in Spain.

Despite being a coastal hike, this route is far from flat. Expect constant ascents and descents as the path climbs over headlands and drops into hidden coves. It’s as rewarding — and as tiring — as a full mountain hike, but with the added bonus of swimming in crystal‑clear Mediterranean water whenever you feel like it.

This guide covers the most popular section of the GR‑92: a two‑ or three‑day hike between Palamós and Begur. Each day has its own character, from wild coves to elegant villages and cliff‑top viewpoints. Click the cards below to explore each stage in detail.

Camí de la Ronda Vocabulary

When talking about place names, I use local Catalan vocabulary:

Camí de la Ronda History

The Camí de la Ronda began as a network of coastal footpaths linking one cove to the next. Fishermen, lighthouse keepers, smugglers and traginers (mule‑cart drivers) used these routes to move along what was once a remote coastline.

After the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), smuggling increased dramatically, and the Guardia Civil patrolled the coastline along these paths. From the 1950s onwards, as Spain opened to tourism under the Franco regime, the Camí de la Ronda became a popular hiking route.

In the early 2000s, Spain introduced the Ley de Costas to protect the coastline from over‑development. Many sections of the GR‑92 have since been restored to their original coastal alignment, undoing earlier diversions around hotels and private estates.

Today, the Camí de la Ronda is one of the most scenic coastal trails in Europe — a perfect weekend escape or multi‑day adventure.

Getting to Weekend Getaway on Costa Brava I - Camó de Ronda

Address: Palamós, Girona 17230

The northern Costa Brava has no rail service, so the most practical way to reach these coastal towns is by bus. Moventis Sarfa‑Bus operates route 100, which connects Barcelona with the main villages along this section of the Camí de Ronda.

Because this is a linear three‑day hike, travelling by bus works well:

Notes:

  1. The times on my bus route map in the documents section are valid on the day that I did this trip and SarfaBus-Moventis may change times depending on demand. Use the below link to consult times and prices and buy your tickets.
  2. Outbound journey on day one is from Barcelona-Estacio Nord to Palamos-Sarfa. The return bus stop in Begur is Begur-Plaza Forgas to Barcelona-Estacio Nord.
  3. Barcelona-Estacio Nord is the main bus terminal near Arc de Triomf. See the Public Transport Guide - Estacio Nord section for more information about the bus terminal.
