About the Human Towers Museum
The Museu de Casteller de Catalunya in Valls is the first museum entirely dedicated to the Catalan sport of human towers, known as castells (castles). Recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, castells are a competitive and deeply symbolic tradition where teams of up to 500 people build towers by climbing onto each other’s shoulders — often reaching heights of 7 to 9 tiers.
Castells are more than a spectacle — they’re a test of strength, balance, teamwork, and trust. The base tier is formed by nine strong men, surrounded by a dense support ring of 150+ teammates acting as human buttresses. From there, each tier climbs up the backs and shoulders of the previous level, culminating in a crowning tier of two children who complete the tower. The Colla Vella dels Xiquets de Valls famously set the record in 1981 with a 9-tier human tower.
Scoring in castells competitions is based on:
- Number of tiers successfully built
- Symmetry and form of the tower
- Orderly assembly (raising) and disassembly (lowering)
To truly understand the human towers sport, you need to see it — which is why we’ve included a video from the Castells World Championships in Tarragona below.

Without seeing it in person, it’s impossible to grasp the scale and emotion of castells. This DW Euromaxx video offers a glimpse into the bi-annual World Championships held in Tarragona.
