Started as an open-air market during the middle of the 19th century, Construction of the current covered market began in 1892 with the inauguration in 1913.
The building is of a modernist style by architect Falques i Urpi with the space divided into three bodies similar to a church with a central nave and two side naves of lower height to the central nave. The exterior features decorative pillars and green tiled inlays. The roof is wrought iron supported by brick pillars.

The market was refurbished from 2010 to 2014 and contains a total of 4863 square metres of interior space of which 2582 square metres is dedicated to stalls. The market also contains a large two floor Mercadona supermarket.
Sants food Market has step free access from the street with no changes in level inside. The Mercadona supermarket has an elevator to the basement supermarket.
There are bicycle anchorage points behind the market in Carrer Daoiz i Velarde.
