About Plaça de la Vila de Gràcia
Plaça de la Vila de Gràcia is the historic and cultural heart of the Gràcia neighborhood in Barcelona. Originally the central square of the independent town of Vila de Gràcia, it remains a vibrant gathering place for locals and visitors alike. The square is framed by pedestrian streets and surrounded by terrace bars and restaurants, making it one of the most popular Barcelona plazas for dining and socializing.
Dominating the square is the iconic 33-meter-high clock tower, built between 1862 and 1864 by architect Antoni Rovira i Trias. Its octagonal design and bell tower have become a symbol of the district’s identity. The tower played a key role during the Conscripts’ Revolt of 1870, when locals resisted military enrollment and used the bell to rally the neighborhood for six days of defiance.
Adjacent to the tower is the Gràcia town hall, a striking building with a blue façade designed by Francesc Berenguer in 1904. The town hall continues to serve as the administrative center of the Gràcia district of Barcelona.
In the center of the square stands a preserved industrial chimney, a nod to Gràcia’s working-class roots and its past as a hub of small-scale manufacturing. The chimney adds character and historical depth to the square’s modern-day charm.
Throughout the year, Plaça de la Vila de Gràcia hosts cultural events, including concerts, casteller performances, and the famous correfoc fire run during the Fiesta Major de Gràcia in August.
