About Figueres Sant Pere Church

The Sant Pere Church Figueres is a Romanesque church in the historic centre of the town, dating from the 10th century and reconstructed in Gothic style during the 14th century. Its façade, completed in 1578, features a large stained glass window that fills the nave with light. Despite suffering severe damage during the Spanish Civil War, the church was rebuilt between 1941 and 1948, preserving its historic character.

Salvador Dalí had a lifelong connection to Sant Pere Church: he was baptised here, received his First Communion, and in 1989, his funeral was held in this very space. Located next to the Dalí Theatre-Museum Figueres, the church is an essential stop for visitors exploring Dalí’s hometown.

Salvador Dalí's Death and Funeral in Figueres

Salvador Dalí died on Monday, January 23rd 1989, at the age of 84, having suffered from heart failure brought on by pneumonia.

Two days later, on Wednesday January 25th 1989, the funeral was held in Figueres. Dalí’s coffin was placed in a funeral carriage draped in black, and a procession moved slowly through the streets of Figueres to the Sant Pere Church. Crowds lined the route in silence, marking the farewell to Catalonia’s most famous surrealist.

Salvador Dalí Funeral

About 500 people, including regional authorities, packed the interior, while several thousand townspeople gathered outside to bid farewell. The ceremony was solemn, candlelit, and traditional in tone, contrasting with Dalí’s flamboyant style. The church was filled to capacity and the square overflowing with mourners as TV cameras captured the moment for a 45‑minute national broadcast on Spanish television.

After the service, the funeral procession continued. Four employees of the Dalí Museum, wearing Dalí‑designed dark blue and gold‑festooned uniforms, carried the mahogany casket on their shoulders from the church for a simple burial ceremony at the museum. The casket, with a crucifix on its cover, was lowered into a marble tomb beneath the museum’s geodesic crystal dome. This made Sant Pere Church the site of Dalí’s final farewell, while the Dalí Theatre-Museum Figueres became his eternal resting place.

Today, Sant Pere Church stands not only as a monument of Romanesque and Gothic heritage but also as a place of memory, deeply tied to the milestones of Dalí’s life and death. Its proximity to the Dalí Theatre-Museum makes it an essential stop for visitors exploring Figueres and Dalí’s legacy.

Accessibility & What to take for Figueres Sant Pere Church

For the Figueres day trip I pack a small 10L rucksack with a fleece jersey and if the weather forecast says rain, a waterproof poncho.

You may be asked to remove your hat before entering Sant Pere Church. Equally you may be denied entry if under dressed (Miniskirts, hot pants, see through clothes etc). However when I visited there were no staff inside.

Access to the church is step free from street level with wide isles and no level changes inside.
