About Tarragona Port Museum
The Museu del Port de Tarragona, refurbished and relaunched in 2021, is the Port Authority’s contribution to the city’s cultural landscape. Located in a historic warehouse on the Costa Wharf, the museum preserves and showcases the maritime and industrial heritage that shaped Tarragona’s identity.
The collection explores the evolution of the port from its origins in Roman Tarraco to the modern petrochemical and container era. Interactive displays illustrate how the breakwater expanded across the centuries, from ancient foundations to medieval growth, early industrialisation and today’s large‑scale commercial operations.
Exhibits cover ship maintenance from the age of sail through steam power to marine diesel engines, alongside sections dedicated to port services such as customs, firefighting, dredging and cargo handling. The museum also highlights the daily life of dock workers, comparing uniforms and equipment used by divers, security staff, stevedores and naval personnel.
A small but fascinating collection of sextants, radio‑navigation devices and lighthouse bulbs demonstrates how maritime navigation has evolved. Historic port clocks, essential for coordinating departures with tides and wind, offer insight into the precision required in earlier eras of seafaring.
Overall, the museum provides an engaging overview of Tarragona’s long relationship with the sea, blending social history, engineering, navigation and community heritage.
