About Town Hall in Plaza Sant Jaume

Views: 619. Updated: Sep 21, 2021 by: Barcelona Travel Hacks

In Roman times the area of Plaza Sant Jaume was the Forum of the town, an open public space used for meetings.

The Current day building, much older than it looks, contains many large halls that have been used for governance of the city over the centuries. An example of which is the Sala de Cent which was used by the council of 100 counts from 1373 till its disolution in 1714.

The building is by architect Pere Llobet and built in the 14th Century. However the Facade contains features such as statues of King Jaume I and Joan Fivaller in the vulted niches. They were sculpted by Josep Bover in 1847.

Visits are not normally permitted to the interior. However on certain days of the year such as the Dia nacional de Catalunya, National day of Catalunya, 11th September, The Townhall is open for visits from the public.

Also according to the web it was possible to visit the interior on Sunday'between 10 and 14h but this is nolonger available. Hopefully visits will be restarted soon. When I visited It was on the national day of Catalunya but the queue was very long and the palace full of people.
