About Montserrat Monastery and easy mountain hermitage walking route

This day trip is to visit the Montserrat Monastery and then complete an EASY 7km circular route walking up into the mountains to visit abandoned and ruined hermitages and viewpoints. Once back at the Monastery, return home via Cramallera or Cable car to get FGC train back to Plaza Espana Barcelona.

The route starts at the Monastery then heads up in to the mountains via a path behind Plaza de l'abat Oliba. This path follows the dry river bed of Santa Maria via concrete steps and a forest path to reach the Santa Anna Hermitage ruins. here we turn off towards Sant Joan.

Upon arriving at the Sant Joan Superior Funicular station The route takes a gravel road towards the Sant Joan chapel and ruined hermitage.

Returning via the same gravel road to Sant Joan Superior funicular station the route then follows Cami de las Ermitas along the siera larga ridge before turning down towards Sant Miquel Chapel and Iron Cross viewpoint.

After Sant miquel the route follows a gradually descending concrete path back to the Monastery.

Visiting Montserrat Monastery and easy mountain hermitage walking route

I recommend getting to the monastery around 10h because it gets really busy. It is best to visit the monastery first and if you want you can visit the Black Madona statue behind the altar. To visit the Black Madona you have to use an access door to the right of the basilica and pay a small fee of 2 euros.

Take plenty of water when going into the mountains because it gets really hot and there is little shade from the sun.

Getting to Montserrat Monastery and easy mountain hermitage walking route

Address: Monestir de Montserrat, Monistrol de Montserrat. 08199

The quickest way is to get the FGC train From Plaza Espana to Aeri de Montserrat and transfer onto the cable car. This is my recommended route as it offers the most scenic views. However there is also a slower and less scenic cremallera train that departs from Monistrol de Montserrat and arrives at Montserrat monastery via Monistrol vila.

These stations are on the FGC LLobregat Anoia lines.
