Gotheborg East Indiaman – Replica Sailing Ship & Barcelona 2022 Visit
Historical Note: The Gotheborg visited Barcelona during winter 2022–2023 and was moored at Port Vell for several months. This page remains as a historical record with photos, ship history and visitor information from that period.
About the Gotheborg East Indiaman
The Gotheborg is the world’s largest operational and sailing wooden replica of an 18th‑century East Indiaman merchant vessel. The ship is a reconstruction of the original Gotheborg I, launched in 1738 and used by the Swedish East India Company for long‑distance trade with China.
The original vessel sank just outside Gothenburg harbour on 12 September 1745 while returning from her third voyage to Canton. Inspired by this history, construction of the modern replica began in 1995. The hull was launched in 2003, and the full rigging was tested and completed by 2005.
Unlike a warship, the Gotheborg is an armed merchantman designed for long voyages with a cargo capacity of around 830 tonnes and equipped with 30 cannons for protection. The ship combines traditional craftsmanship with modern safety systems, allowing it to sail internationally while preserving authentic 18th‑century design.

The Gotheborg’s Visit to Barcelona (Winter 2022–2023)
During winter 2022, the Gotheborg arrived in Barcelona as part of her European expedition and moored at Moll de Bosch i Alsina in Port Vell, next to Rambla de Mar. For several months the ship opened to the public, offering guided visits, deck access and educational displays about 18th‑century maritime trade.
Visitors could explore the upper decks, view the rigging and cannons, and learn about the ship’s construction and voyages. The first days of the visit were especially impressive, with the vessel fully crewed and fully rigged before entering winter maintenance mode.
