Barcelona’s historic Columbus Monument built for the 1888 Exposition. Ride the elevator to a panoramic viewpoint below the statue and enjoy sweeping views of La Rambla and Port Vell
About the Columbus Monument (Mirador de Colom)
Standing proudly at the foot of La Rambla, the Columbus Monument—or Mirador de Colom—is one of Barcelona’s most iconic landmarks. Erected for the 1888 Universal Exposition, this 60-meter cast-iron column honors Christopher Columbus and his historic return to Spain after discovering the Americas. It marks the spot where Columbus is said to have reported to Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand V upon his return.
Atop the Corinthian column stands a 7-meter bronze statue by sculptor Rafael Atché, depicting Columbus with an outstretched arm and a scroll in hand. Contrary to popular belief, the statue doesn’t point west toward the Americas or east toward Genoa, it faces south-southeast, likely to symbolically gesture toward the sea.
The monument’s base is richly decorated with allegorical figures representing the four realms of Spain—Catalonia, Aragon, Castile, and León—as well as eight individuals linked to Columbus’s voyages. Four staircases lead up to the pedestal, each flanked by majestic bronze lions.
Located in Plaça del Portal de la Pau, the monument sits at the gateway to Port Vell and is just steps from the Barcelona Maritime Museum.

Visiting the Columbus Monument (Mirador de Colom)
Hidden inside the column is a narrow elevator that whisks visitors up to a small, enclosed panoramic viewing platform just below the statue. From here, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of La Rambla, Port Vell, and the Gothic Quarter rooftops—one of the most underrated viewpoints in the city.
Photography Tips at Mirador de Colom
While the Columbus Monument offers a unique vantage point over La Rambla and Port Vell, photography from the viewing platform can be tricky. The enclosed space is surrounded by glass panels and partially obstructed by the monument’s ornate metal crown and sculptural details, which limit wide-angle shots and clean sightlines.
If you're planning to take photos, a compact camera or smartphone is your best bet. These smaller devices are easier to maneuver within the tight space and can fit between the decorative elements to capture clearer views. A large DSLR with a telescopic lens may prove cumbersome and difficult to position effectively, especially given the confined elevator and platform dimensions.
For better skyline shots, consider pairing your visit with one of these nearby panoramic viewpoints:
- Miramar to Port Cable Car – A scenic ride offering sweeping views of the harbor and coastline.
- Montjuïc Funicular & Cable Car – A relaxing ascent to the top of Montjuïc with panoramic city views.
- Montjuïc Castle – A historic fortress with 360° views over Barcelona and the Mediterranean.
These spots offer more open-air perspectives and are ideal for capturing Barcelona’s skyline without obstruction.
Opening Hours
- Daily: 08:30h – 20:30h
- Closed: January 1st & December 25th
Accessibility & What to bring to the Columbus Monument (Mirador de Colom)
The lift to the viewing platform is a confined space for 2 people only plus the lift operator so no large bags.
Pushchairs are impossible due to the size of the elevator. This is announced as apt for wheelchairs but I think it only includes the basement gift shop at the base of the tower.
There is no bicycle anchorage near to Torre Colom.
