About the Montjuïc Cable Car and TMB Funicular
The Montjuïc Cable Car (Telefèric de Montjuïc) is one of the most scenic ways to reach Castell de Montjuïc, the iconic castle on the hill in Barcelona. This gondola-style lift ascends 84 metres over Montjuïc mountain, offering panoramic views of the city, coastline, and landmarks like the Sagrada Família and Port Vell.
The 750-metre route glides above the lush Montjuïc Gardens and includes a mid-station at Mirador de Montjuïc. It’s a must-do for visitors looking for a cable car to Montjuïc Castle with views of Barcelona’s skyline and sea.
At the base of the cable car is the Montjuïc Funicular (Funicular de Montjuïc), a TMB-operated railway that connects directly from Paral·lel Metro Station (L2 and L3). This makes it one of the most convenient ways to get to Montjuïc Castle by public transport. The funicular is fully integrated into the Barcelona Metro network, so you can use a T-Casual or Hola Barcelona travel card.
Important: The Montjuïc Cable Car is not part of the TMB fare system and requires a separate ticket. You can buy tickets online or at the station before boarding.
Note that this is not the same cable car as the Transbordador Aeri del Port, which features red cabins and travels from Miramar Gardens to Barceloneta, flying over Port Vell.
History of the Montjuïc Cable Car and TMB Funicular
The Montjuïc Funicular (Funicular de Montjuïc) was inaugurated in 1928 to serve the International Exhibition of 1929. Originally, it included a second upper stage that connected Avinguda Miramar directly to Castell de Montjuïc, making it one of the earliest public transport links to the castle on the hill in Barcelona.
In preparation for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, the funicular was extensively modernized to serve key venues on Montjuïc mountain, including the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, Palau Sant Jordi, and the Piscinas de Salt (Olympic diving pools).
The upper stage of the funicular was replaced in 1970 by the first version of the Montjuïc Cable Car (Telefèric de Montjuïc). This early cable car used open cabins and provided a direct aerial route to Montjuïc Castle, offering scenic views of the city and coastline.
After decades of service, the cable car system was closed in October 2004 for a full rebuild. The new Telefèric de Montjuïc reopened in May 2007 with a fleet of 55 enclosed gondola cabins. These modern cabins detach from the running cable at each station, allowing passengers to board safely and comfortably.
Today, the Montjuïc Cable Car is one of the most popular ways to reach Castell de Montjuïc, combining convenience with breathtaking views. It’s a key part of the Montjuïc mountain transport network, linking seamlessly with the TMB Funicular and Barcelona Metro at Paral·lel station.

The Montjuïc Funicular journey time is approximately 5 minutes. From the upper station, you can transfer directly to the Montjuïc Cable Car, which also takes about 5 minutes to reach Castell de Montjuïc. Along the way, enjoy breathtaking views of Barcelona’s skyline, coastline, and gardens.

Accessibility & What to take with you for Montjuïc Funicular & Cable Car
Accessibility: The Montjuïc Funicular is fully accessible for visitors with reduced mobility. Both Paral·lel and Avinguda Miramar stations have lift access, and the funicular carriages are spacious enough to accommodate bicycles, pushchairs, and wheelchairs. This makes it one of the most family-friendly and accessible transport options to reach Montjuïc mountain.
The Montjuïc Cable Car cabins are smaller and do not accommodate bicycles. However, two cabins in the fleet are adapted for wheelchair access, allowing visitors with mobility needs to enjoy the scenic ride to Castell de Montjuïc.
What to bring: Wear comfortable shoes for walking around the castle and gardens. Bring a refillable water bottle—there are fountains available at the castle. If you're planning to use public transport, carry a T-Casual or Hola Barcelona travel card for the metro and funicular. Remember, the cable car requires a separate ticket.
