Pyrenees Ribes De Freser To Vall De Núria Via Queralbs
15 Km walk from Ribes de Freser to the Núria resort via the spectacular vall de Núria mountain valley, Queralbs village & waterfalls
About Ribes De Freser To Vall De Núria Via Queralbs
This is a linear 15km MEDIUM or MEDIUM-HARD mountain walk in the Catalan Pyrenees starting at Ribes de Freser and finishing at the Vall de Núria Winter Ski and Summer resort . This Ribes de Freser to Núria hiking route is a classic Catalan Pyrenees hiking itinerary and one of the best hikes in Girona province for those looking for a medium-hard mountain hike with significant elevation gain. To return to Ribes de Freser take the Cremallera racked railway from Núria ski resort back to Ribes de Freser Renfe station, making this a perfect mountain hike with train return in Catalonia and a great option for a day trip to Vall de Núria.
Núria is a high mountain valley with a hotel complex and ski resort at an altitude of 1965 metres above sea level, with Ribes de Freser being 899 metres above sea level, so the total elevation gain of this hike is 1331 metres, which earns this route a MEDUIM-HARD classification. This makes it one of the best day hikes to Vall de Núria for hikers seeking a challenging uphill hiking route in the Pyrenees and one of the most scenic Pyrenees hiking routes near Barcelona.
From RENFE Ribes de Freser walk towards the centre of the town parallel to the river. We turn off at a curve in the road and take a small alley out of the town and into the forest. From here start heading up through cattle grazing hills and foothill grazing farmland, typical of scenic hikes near Ribes de Freser and hiking near Ripoll.
The route is 100% uphill all the way with brief flat sections. The first half of the route is through forests, foothill grazing farmland and small mountain villages, arriving at the picturesque town of Queralbs. This section is ideal for those searching for forest and mountain trails in Catalonia or a scenic hike in the Catalan Pyrenees. Note that the Cremallera racked railway stops at Queralbs so those wanting to do a shorter route can cut this section out and start from Queralbs village, following the popular Queralbs to Núria trail.
The second half of the route enters the Núria river valley and we walk up a mountain path that has old stone bridges, caves, waterfalls, viewpoints and small pine forests. This makes it a great choice for hikers looking for a river valley hiking route with waterfalls and viewpoints in the Catalan Pyrenees, as well as a Pyrenees hike with old stone bridges and pine forest mountain paths.
This route can also be done in reverse starting at Núria ski resort, but I prefer to do it starting at Ribes de Freser because it is a good workout and one of the best mountain workout hikes in Catalonia. A MEDIUM level of fitness is required. I completed the route in about 6 hours as an experienced mountain hiker, which is typical for a 15km mountain walk in the Pyrenees with this elevation gain. Note that good time management is also necessary to ensure getting the last Cremallera train back to Ribes de Freser. This makes it an excellent day hike to Vall de Núria with train return for those planning hiking in the Catalan Pyrenees without a car.

Visiting Ribes De Freser To Vall De Núria Via Queralbs
About 2 minutes walk from the Ribes de Freser Renfe train station is Bar Gusi, a convenient stop that serves snacks and drinks all day, including vegan options. It’s a popular choice for hikers starting the Ribes de Freser to Vall de Núria hiking route or anyone exploring the Catalan Pyrenees or planning a day trip to Vall de Núria.
Allow 6–9 hours to complete this medium-hard mountain hike depending on your physical fitness and experience. This is one of the most rewarding day hikes in the Catalan Pyrenees and among the best hikes in Girona province, especially for those looking for a scenic, full-day adventure.
I recommend completing this route from June to August to enjoy the wild flowers in the meadows, the full leafy green forests, and the chance to swim in Núria Lake or at the Salt de la Cua de Cavall waterfall near Núria Resort. Summer conditions make this one of the best Vall de Núria summer hiking routes and a great option for Pyrenees hiking routes near Barcelona.
Equally, I have done this route in winter, hiking from Ribes de Freser to Núria through frozen meadows, icy forests and snow-covered rocky paths in the Vall de Núria valley, and it was a real challenge. With the constraint of arriving at Núria before the last Cremallera train departs, this winter version should only be attempted by the fittest alpine hikers with experience in winter mountain routes in the Catalan Pyrenees.
For a safer option, suitable for all levels of hiker and those without winter alpine experience, start at Vall de Núria resort and descend to Ribes de Freser if doing this in the colder months. This is one of the best winter hiking routes in Vall de Núria for beginners because it avoids the steep uphill climb. It also gives the option of cutting the route short at Queralbs if time runs out, using the Cremallera railway as a safe return point.
Hiking Ribes de Freser to Vall de Núria with a Dog
The route starts by traversing small mountain plains linked by forests on the lower slopes, where you may encounter free-grazing cattle. The forests are a mix of oak, beech, cork, and pine, typical of Pyrenees nature trails. After Queralbs, the forest transitions to mostly pines, which is where you may encounter poisonous Pine Processionary Caterpillars in spring and summer.
The route is fully viable for a dog and presents no technical difficulties for your furry friend. In the village of Vilamanya you may find free-roaming cats, so keep this in mind if your dog reacts to them. After Queralbs there are several safe spots where your dog can swim in the mountain river, making this one of the most enjoyable dog-friendly hikes in the Catalan Pyrenees.
