About Montjuic Castle Fortress

Views: 398. Updated: Sep 18, 2021 by: Barcelona Travel Hacks

The current Montjuic Castle is a Napoleonic style fortress from 1799 with a history of fortifications in this location from 1640.

Until 2007 the fort was owned by the Spanish military and served as an army barracks with access to the public for limited areas.

Ownership was transferred to the local Catalan Government who are restoring parts of the castle and opening more sections to the public and today most of the castle is open to the public.

At the time of writing the entry fee is 5 euros with reductions for seniors, stidents and children.

Once finished inside the castle there is a nice circular walking route round the perimeter of a distance of 1.5 km. This route offers spectacular views of the port of Barcelona on one side and the city on the other side.

Tip: Inside the castle behind the main keep, there is a citrus grove with lemon and orange trees. Here you will find a fountain that dispenses free drinking water. Also inside the main square of the castle there is a small restaurant selling hot and cold food, bottled water, cola, snacks at tourist prices.
