About Barcelona Cathedral

Views: 368. Updated: Sep 21, 2021 by: Barcelona Travel Hacks

Historical excavations around Barcelona Catedral reveal evidence of a religious structure from the forth century. Construction of the current cathedral commenced on 1 May 1298 and was finished in the 15th century. The Cathedral is dedicated to the martyr Santa Eulalia, patron saint of Barcelona. She was tortured to death in late Roman times and is buried under the main altar. Santa Eualia is a local holiday celebrated on 12 of February.

Visiting Barcelona Cathedral

Views: 368. Updated: Sep 21, 2021 by: Barcelona Travel Hacks

To visit the cathedral, entry is via the main front door which can suffer from queues. The visit allows access to the inside cloistered garden, the main cathedral space and via lift to the roof for spectacular views of central gothic area of Barcelona, Montjuic and the waterfront. The main entry ticket is 3 euros but for an additional 3 euros you can pay to use the lift to go to the roof.

I recommend visiting the cloister with small chapels, gardens, fountains, medieval tombstones and geese. The 13 white geese are said to symbolise the age of Eulalia when she suffered her martyrdom. The tradition of goose husbandry is due to a very practical feature of the geese: their deafening noise was a good defense against unwanted intruders and thieves. From the cloister you reach the small museum containing two very precious statues representing the Santa Eulalia.
