About Roman Wall Remains & Plaça Ramon Berenguer III

Roman Barcelona (Barcino) was founded in the time of Augustus and grew to be a large Colony of the Roman Empire and at the end of the 3rd century, Emperor Claudius decided to strengthen the primitive wall. This second wall followed the outline of the earlier one but was thicker and taller. 75 watchtowers were also built.

The roman wall remained around the former roman colony for over a thousand years until King James I of Aragon ordered a new wall to be built around the now much larger medieval city of Barcelona in the 13th century. Not much remains of the 13th century wall except the section in Aveninda Parallel next to the Barcelona Maritime Museum.

Barcelona was not the Roman capital in Spain but actually Tarragona (Tarraco).
