About Palau Sant Jordí & Montjuïc Olympic Park

Palau Sant Jordí is a multi-use pavillion located in the Montjuïc mountain in the Olympic Zone next to the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium, and next to the Picornell Swimming Pools las Piscinas Picornell.

Palau Sant Jordí

Palau Sant Jordi was built for the Barcelona 1992 Olympics and designed by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki as an indoor arena with capacity for 16,000 people.

Palau Sant Jordí is part of the Montjuïc Olympic park complex. Within the park is a 136 metre high Telefonica needle like communications tower. A competition entry for Telefonica for an Olympic telecoms tower resulted in the needle design sited immediately next to the Palau Sant Jordi Arena.

Leaning gently from a three-point foundation to coincide with the angle of the sun at solstice, the tower's feet rest on a brick drum (a requirement of the competition). The base features an articulated door that opens like an eye to provide access to telecommunication equipment. The heel of the tower is supported on a circular shell of white concrete, clad in broken tiles (trencadís).

The tower structure repeats the fundamental geometry of the base to support a segment which houses the array of antennas.

Visiting Palau Sant Jordí & Montjuïc Olympic Park

It is not possible to visit the interior of Palau Sant Jordí except when attending an event but it is possible to walk around the gardens with the Telefonica tower monument.

Palau Sant Jordí it often hosts concerts. I have seen The Cure and Mark Knopfler live in The indoor arena of Palau Sant jordi.

Behind the main outdoor arena is a smaller hall called Sala Sant Jordi which hosts rock concerts. I have seen Gary Moore, Deep purple and Motorhead here.
