Barcelona’s Fiesta Major de Gràcia returns 15–22 August 2026 with decorated streets, live music, castellers and the iconic correfoc in the Gràcia neighbourhood
About Fiesta Major de Grácia 2026
The Fiesta Major de Gràcia (Festa Major de Gràcia) is the most famous neighbourhood festival in Barcelona and one of the city’s biggest summer events. Every August, the streets of Gràcia transform with spectacular decorations, live music stages, traditional Catalan performances and open‑air celebrations that attract visitors from across Barcelona and beyond.
Decorated Streets – The Heart of the Fiesta Major de Gràcia
The decorated streets (carrers guarnits) are the most famous and beloved part of the Fiesta Major de Gràcia. Each year, neighbourhood associations spend months designing and building spectacular themed decorations that transform entire streets into immersive worlds. Past themes have included underwater kingdoms, enchanted forests, outer space, medieval villages and scenes from Catalan folklore.
All decorations are handmade by volunteers using recycled materials, papier-mâché, wood, fabrics and creative lighting. The level of craftsmanship is extraordinary, and the competition between streets is friendly but intense — every group hopes to win the coveted prize for Best Decorated Street.
During the festival, visitors can wander from street to street discovering new themes, live music stages, pop-up bars and cultural activities. The atmosphere is vibrant during the day and magical at night when the decorations are illuminated.
History of the Gràcia Neighbourhood and Its Festival
Gràcia was an independent town until the late 19th century, when the expansion of the Eixample connected it to Barcelona. Officially annexed in 1897, the neighbourhood has retained its village‑like identity, with a mix of long‑standing Catalan families, artists, students and a strong community spirit.
The Fiesta Major de Gràcia is rooted in this community identity. Local associations spend months designing and building elaborate themed decorations that transform entire streets and squares. Many themes draw on Catalan folklore, featuring gegants (giant figures), castellers (human towers), diables (devils), dragons and traditional dances. The festival programme includes swing and folk concerts, children’s workshops, communal meals, craft fairs and cultural performances.
The earliest records of the festival date back to 1817, when it was held in honour of Gràcia’s patron saint, Saint Isidro. At that time, Gràcia was a rural village surrounded by farmland. In modern times, the festival is celebrated from 15–22 August, coinciding with the Feast of the Assumption (La Asunción), a national holiday in Spain.
Today, the Fiesta Major de Gràcia is recognised as a Traditional Festival of National Interest by the Catalan Government and remains one of the most vibrant and authentic cultural celebrations in Barcelona.

Visiting Fiesta Major de Grácia 2026
During the daytime, the Fiesta Major de Gràcia offers a family‑friendly atmosphere with children’s workshops, puppet shows, comedy performances and quieter live music. Many streets host large communal lunches where neighbours gather at long tables to share paella cooked in giant one‑metre pans, grilled meats and vegetables, cava and local wine.
After sunset, the neighbourhood transforms into one of Barcelona’s liveliest street parties. Dozens of decorated streets host open‑air bars, live bands and DJ sets that continue late into the night, creating a vibrant festival atmosphere across Gràcia.
Some of the most consistently popular streets to visit include:
- Carrer Verdi – often the most elaborate and ambitious designs
- Carrer Progrés – creative themes with strong community involvement
- Carrer Mozart – known for artistic and detailed installations
- Plaça de la Vila de Gràcia – the festival’s central hub
- Carrer Joan Blanques – smaller but highly imaginative decorations
Expect crowds in the evenings, especially on the first two nights. For a quieter experience, visit early in the morning or late afternoon when the streets are less busy and easier to photograph.

Live Music – The A Swing Band
Billswing was founded in September 1998 as a non‑profit association dedicated to promoting swing dancing in Barcelona and, later, across Catalonia. The A Swing Band will be performing on one of the festival’s outdoor stages this year, and they are a fantastic choice for lovers of ragtime, swing and vintage dance music. Their repertoire ranges from fast, energetic tempos ideal for shag and balboa to slower, smoother rhythms perfect for lindy hop and blues.
Castellers are one of the most iconic traditions of Catalonia. Teams build human towers up to seven or eight levels high, supported by a large base of people. Gràcia has two active teams, and both perform during the festival.
Fiesta Major de Gràcia 2026 – Correfoc
- Saturday 22 August 2026 from 23:00h to 00:30h: The route begins at Plaça de la Vila de Gràcia and continues along Sant Domènec, Sant Pere Màrtir, Pere Serafí, Ros de Olano, Torrent de l’Olla, Carrer de l’Or, Torrijos, Travessera de Gràcia, Torrent de l’Olla, and returns to Plaça de la Vila de Gràcia.
The Correfoc is the dramatic closing event of the Fiesta Major de Gràcia. Performers dressed as devils, imps and dragons run through the streets with firecrackers and sparklers while drummers set the rhythm. It is loud, chaotic and unforgettable — a true Catalan fire festival.
- Correfoc Safety Tips:
- Wear old cotton clothing with long sleeves and trousers — sparks can burn small holes.
- Cover your neck with a scarf or bandana and protect your hair with a hat.
- Protect your eyes — shield them when devils get close or use inexpensive goggles.
- Wear closed shoes (trainers), not sandals.
- Use earplugs if you are sensitive to loud bangs.
- Follow instructions from marshals and devil dancers at all times.
Photo‑Friendly Visiting Schedule
The decorated streets of Gràcia look completely different depending on the time of day, so it’s worth visiting twice if you want great photos. I captured my daytime decoration photos in the afternoon, when the light was soft and the details of each theme were easy to photograph without heavy crowds.
In the evening, the neighbourhood transforms. The decorated streets are illuminated, the bars open, and live music fills the squares. This is the best time for atmospheric “action shots” — people dancing, bands performing, and the decorations glowing under coloured lights. If you want both clean decoration photos and vibrant night‑time festival images, plan to visit your favourite streets twice.
- Afternoon (16:00–19:00): Best for photographing the decorated streets with natural light and fewer crowds.
- Evening (20:00–23:00): Ideal for illuminated decorations, live music, dancing and lively festival atmosphere.
- Late Night (23:00–02:00): Perfect for capturing the energy of the street parties, DJs and packed squares.
What to take with you for Fiesta Major de Grácia
Most of the Gràcia Festival takes place outdoors, so it’s worth packing a few essentials to stay comfortable throughout the day and night. The Metro stations serving Gràcia (Diagonal, Fontana, Lesseps and Gràcia–FGC) are all step‑free with elevators from platform to street level.
- Comfortable walking shoes: You’ll be on your feet for hours exploring decorated streets, concerts and parades.
- Water bottle: August in Barcelona is hot and humid — staying hydrated is essential.
- Portable phone charger: Between photos, videos and navigating the festival map, batteries drain quickly.
- Light clothing for daytime and nighttime: Temperatures are high, especially in the narrow streets undercover of the street decorations.
- Ear protection: Useful for children or anyone sensitive to loud music or fireworks.
