About Teatre Grec

Views: 380. Updated: Sep 20, 2021 by: Barcelona Travel Hacks

These gardens which began life as a rose garden were also created for the 1929 International Exhibition.

An old quarry was used to construct an amphitheatre that now hosts many of the Barcelona Grec Festival performances every summer.

The Theatre was designed by the architects Ramon Reventos and Nicolau Maria Rubio i Tuduri, taking inspiration from the Ancient Greek amphitheatres especially the small Greek town of Epidauro.

The Greek theatre measures 460 square metres and seats 1900 people.

Located in the grounds of the Greek Gardens (Jardines Grec) which were designed by Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier from 1917 to 1924.

The theatre opened in the late 1920s with the last show being held was the 1932 performance of Sophocles Electra. During the SPanish civil war the Greek Theatre remained unused.

Throughout the 1950s, the theatre was used on several occasions for performances, including a Catalan performance of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar.

In the 1960s and 1970s, the theatre was largely unused until finally being acquired by the local council who in 1976 organised the first edition of the Grec Festival.

The Greek Festival is an international event of theatre, dance music and circus performance and takes place each year in July and August.

These gardens have good views of the city. Additionally, The greek theatre is used as an outdoor venue for yoga classes.
