The Teleferic de Montjuïc is an scenic way to ascend 84 metres to the top of Montjuïc mountain to visit Montjuïc Castle.

Along the 750 metre trajectory of the cable car ride you will get spectacular views of Barcelona city whilst flying over Montjuïc Gardens.

The Montjuïc cable car includes a mid station called Miremar de Montjuïc.

Note that this is not the same cable car as Transbordador Aeri del Port cable car which has the red cabins and crosses from Montjuïc Miramar Gardens to Barceloneta, flying over Port Vell.

The lower station of the Montjuïc teleferic cable car links into the Funicular de Montjuic from Parallel Metro Station.

Montjuïc Cable car (Teleferico de Montjuïc) History

The Funicular line was opened in 1928 in order to serve the International Exhibition of 1929. Until around 1970, the funicular included a second upper stage, linking the current upper termination station in avenida Miramar with Montjuïc Castle.

Montjuïc Funicular was extensively reconstructed for the 1992 Olympics to serve the stadium facilities of Lluis i Companys and Palau Sant Jordi as well as the Piscinas de salto (diving swimming pool).

The teleferico de Montjuïc cable car was originally put into service in 1970, replacing a former upper stage of the Montjuïc funicular. The first incarnation of the cable car used a fleet of open cars.

The Montjuïc teleferic closed October 2004 and was completely rebuilt, opening in May 2007. The second Montjuïc cable car now uses a fleet of 55 closed cabins.

The current 2007 cable car system uses cable propelled carriages. The carriages are not fixed to the running cable but actually hang from it and ride the running cable to each station where they detach from the running cable to allow passengers to board.
