About Montjuïc to Barceloneta Port Cable Car

The Barcelona Port Cable car, known as Transbordador aeri del port is a 1.3km cable car that links Barceloneta beach near Hotel W to Montjuïc Plaza Miramar in front of the Miramar hotel and viewpoint in Montjuïc.

The cable car flies over the Port Vell Marina and Maremagnum Shopping Complex with a central support tower landing in the world trade centre at the cruise ship berths.

Barcelona port Cable car History

The Barcelona Port cable car was the first cable car to be constructed in Montjuïc and was designed for the 1929 world exhibition but not completed until 1931.

The Transbordador aeri del port comprises three stations:

  1. The tower of San Sebastian: is the tower at the Barceloneta end with a height of 78.4 meters. Above the cable car boarding station was a restaurant.
  2. The tower of Jaime I: is the middle tower and lands at the world trade centre complex on the pier of Barcelona and is 107 meters high. Currently Cable cars do not stop here.
  3. Miramar landing Station: is not a tower but the landing station is attached directly to the side of Montjuïc mountain. Above the landing station is a restaurant calld Terraza Miramar with great views of the Port of Barcelona.

During the Spanish Civil War (1936 to 1939), the cable car was closed, the cables removed and the towers became watch towers for the defence of the port of Barcelona.

In 1958 the Company Telefericos de Barcelona took over ownership and on May 20th 1963 started operating the new cable car which ran uninterrupted till 1995 when a two year refurbishment of the two towers was performed.

The Montjuïc Port Cable car has two cabins (19 person capacity per cabin) which are suspended from the static cable. The cars are pulled along by the running cable with the cabins passing each other in the middle near to the Sant Jaume Tower each cycle of operation. The motor is located in the Miramar station and is directly anchored into Montjuïc mountain, 56 meters above sea level.
