About Poble Espanyol Walled Village

El Poble Espanyol or Spanish village is a walled village enclosure in Montjuïc that reflects the diverse traditional architectural styles from all over Spain.

Poble Espanyol History

Poble Espanyol was built for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition and contains 117 full scale buildings inspired by constructions from geographic zones of Spain such as Andalusia, Castile and Leon, Navarra, the Basque Country and Catalonia. In the middle of the walled village is a large square.

The plan was to demolish Poble Espanyol once the International Exhibition was over but the museum was preserved because of its great success. Poble Espanyol today hosts many different events including gastronomic, festivals, concerts in summer, flamenco shows, private events such as weddings, and children's activities.

Visiting Poble Espanyol Walled Village

As well as the diverse architecture from around Spain, Poble Espanyol has more than 30 artisan shops making handmade items of blown glass, leather, ceramics, jewellery, masks, baskets, and Spanish guitars which are sold to the visitors.

Within the walls of Poble Espanyol is the Fran Daurel Museum which has a collection consisting of works by contemporary artists that deal with abstraction to figurative art and moving in formalism, expressionism, surrealism, hyperrealism and conceptualism.

At night, Sala Upload, a club and live music venue is open till after midnight for events.

El Poble Espanyol hosts concerts in the main square in the summer. I have seen Jeff Beck, ZZ top and Lenny Kravitz here. By buying a ticket to these concerts, I automatically had free entry into Poble Espanyol so I arrived 1 hour before the start of each concert to walk around the interior. See the doors opening time on the concert ticket.

Additionally, Poble Espanyol hosts local bands and events such as live blues music in the summer. Buying tickets for these events also allows free access into the site and I generally arrive a little early to walk round the various streets on the interior.

Within Poble Espanyol, Is Tablao de Carmen created in tribute to the iconic bailaora (flamenco dancer) Carmen Amaya. The Tablao de Carmen offers a true traditional Flamenco Show with drinks and tapas or a dinner as is the tradition for live Flamenco. The Tablau de Carmen ticket includes free access to Poble Espanyol.

Over christmas and New years Eve, the main square has a large heated marque which hosts parties including the new years eve party that starts after the Plaça España Fireworks display.
